Thomas O. Chisholm

1866 - 1960 Hymnal Number: d44 Author of "Trust in the Lord, O troubled soul" in Melodies of Life Thomas O. Chisholm was born in Franklin, Kentucky in 1866. His boyhood was spent on a farm and in teaching district schools. He spent five years as editor of the local paper at Franklin. He was converted to Christianity at the age of 26 and soon after was business manager and office editor of the "Pentecostal Herald" of Louisville, Ky. In 1903 he entered the ministry of the M. E. Church South. His aim in writing was to incorporate as much Scripture as possible and to avoid flippant or sentimental themes. Robert Harkness

1880 - 1961 Hymnal Number: d7 Author of "How I love the Bible, 'tis God's message" in Melodies of Life After attending a revival meeting by Reuben Torrey and Charles M. Alexander, Harkness became Alexander’s pianist. He came to Christ shortly thereafter (on a bicycle, he said), and made several round the world tours with Torrey and Alexander. Harkness was especially well known for his program The Music of the Cross, and as the author of correspondence courses in hymn playing. He wrote over 2,000 hymns and Gospel songs in his lifetime. Avis B. Christiansen

1895 - 1985 Person Name: Avis Burgeson Christiansen Hymnal Number: d12 Author of "Precious hiding place" in Melodies of Life Avis Marguerite Burgeson was born in 1895 and lived in Chicago all her life. She attended the Moody Church, pastored for many years by Dr. Harry Ironside. In 1917, Avis Burgeson married Ernest Christiansen who later became a vice president of Moody Bible Institute. She was a modest and retiring woman, and sometimes used pen names: Avis Burgesson, Christian B. Anson and Constance B. Reid. She began writing poems in childhood, and before her death in 1985 had written thousands of them. She died in 1985. NN, Hymnary

1892 - 1950 Hymnal Number: d43 Author of "They say he is wonderful" in Melodies of Life Seth Sykes and his wife Bessie were traveling evangelists based in Glasgow, Scotland. They traveled around the UK. Seth preached and wrote lyrics to many hymns. They used lantern slide shows to illustrate their message and draw people to their meetings. Brown was director of California Christian Endeavor (international church youth organization) between 1930-1940. In those years this was a large organization, especially in LA-Orange County area. He wrote many spiritual songs along with his wife Margaret.

Swedish Covenant. Daughter of teacher and pastor. Began to write poetry and stories at an early age. First collection, I skymningsstunden (1896) (In the Twilight Hour). Followed by three more volumes, 1906-1920. Wrote a number of original texts and translated several hymns for the first hymnal of the Swedish YMCA.
