Eternity! terrific word!

Author: Johann Rist; J. C. Jacobi Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran hymnal #461 (1908) Lyrics: 1 Eternity! terrific word! Within the heart a piercing sword! Beginning without ending! Eternity, unmeasured time! I sink beneath the though sublime, That I to thee am tending: Deep horrors fill my quaking heart, My lips in speech refuse to part. 2 Eternity! O what a pang! Eternity! no serpent's fang Could send that thrill of terror; When I revolve thy clanking chains, Thy dark abyss of deathless pains, My soul is filled with horror. O search the universe around, No equal terror can be found. 3 Awake, O man, from sinful sleep; Henceforth thy feet from wand'ring keep; Seek God by true repentance! Awake, behold thy wasting sand, Eternity is just at hand, And brings thine awful sentence. This perchance thy final day; This hour thy soul may haste away. 4 Eternity! terrific word! Within the heart a piercing sword! Beginning without ending! Eternity! unmeasured time! I sink beneath the thought sublime, That I to thee am tending: Lord Jesus, when it pleaseth Thee, Grant me Thy blest eternity! Eternity! Tremendous Word

Author: Johann Rist; Johann C. Jacobi Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #9798 Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7.8.8 First Line: Eternity! Tremendous word, Lyrics: 1 Eternity! Tremendous word, Home-striking point, heart-piercing sword, Beginning without ending! Eternity! without a shore, Where ever fiery billows roar, What is thy sight portending? One glimpse of thine unfathomed deep Would rouse a wretch from sinful sleep. 2 What pain was ever thought so great, That must not with the time abate, And lose its utmost rigor? Eternity does never cease, Admits no manner of release, But keeps its constant vigor: Or, as our Savior’s words express, Eternity has not redress. 3 Eternity! how long, how long, Thou seizest senses, heart and tongue With panic, fear and terror! When I revolve thy dreadful chains In that abyss of endless pains, I’m overwhelmed with horror. What’s in this life of misery So frightful as eternity? 4 Should Hell endure as many years, As many men this world of tears Has seen from the creation, As many stars adorn the sky, As many leaves the woods supply, You’d hope for its cessation. This sum of ages would but be One moment to Eternity. 5 But having spent in endless fears So many thousand thousand years, Thy scene is still beginning; When thou hast suffered all these times The just reward of willful crimes, Thy thread ne’er ceases spinning. Th’eternal now, who can unfold? ’Tis ever new, but never old. 6 O Lord, how is thy sentence just In leaving man, that rebel-dust, To his deserved damnation! Short willful sins committed here With long remorse are punished there. O woe beyond relation! Weigh this, thou hardened heart and face Thy time is short, death comes apace. 7 Hast thou yet sense? Avoid the snare; Thy pleasures fleeting moments are, That die as fast as tasted; These, at the hazard of thy soul, Dost thou pursue without control, And seest thy minutes wasted? Thou senseless wretch, thou matchless fool, Thou laugh’st and art the devil’s tool. 8 As long as God eternal reigns, And His almighty sway retains, Hell-torment will be lasting; They shall be plagued with cold and heat, Thirst, hunger, fire shall be their meat, Their worm is never wasting; And this unequalled misery Won’t end till God shall cease to be. 9 Awake and rise from sinful sleep: Bethink thy self, thou straying sheep: Return by true repentance: Arise, thy wicked ways amend; The glass of life runs to its end; Then shiver at thy sentence; Perhaps within few minutes breath Thou’rt snatched away by sudden death. Let neither worldly gain nor lust, Ambition, pride, nor golden dust Longer enslave thy passions; Look how the carnal lethargy O’erspreads the great majority, Who sport with all temptations; Above all things keep in thy sight The forenamed long eternal night. 10 Most reprobate of all mankind, Bereft of sense, hard-hearted, blind, Why dost thou love the creature? Shall that eternal gulf of Hell, Where millions of tormentors dwell, Ne’er shock thy sinful nature? Can then no tongue, no eloquence Persuade thee to a better sense? 11 Eternity! Tremendous word, Home-striking point, heart-piercing sword, Beginning without ending! Eternity without a shore! Where ever fiery billows roar, What is thy sight portending? Lord Jesu, when it pleases Thee, Bring me to blest Eternity. Languages: English Tune Title: PRAHA

Behold, By Grace, And Grace Alone

Author: Ernest William Olson Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #124 (1930) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Behold, by grace, and grace alone, Hath God the Father from His throne Ordained our full salvation. Unto the utmost ends of earth The Sun of Mercy sendeth forth His light to ev'ry nation. The way of life is open, free, O mortal man, to thee, to thee. 2 Thro' love alone His Son was sent To bear the law's dread punishment For all our dire transgression. Our sins He bore, our guilt He owned, For all our deeds His death atoned-- O bountiful possession! His righteousness is full and free, O sinful man, to thee, to thee. 3 For this o'erwhelming sacrifice The Lord will nevermore despise A contrite heart and spirit. By Jesus' death, by Jesus' blood, Full pleasing in the sight of God, His mercy we inherit. The fount of grace flows full and free, O pardoned soul, for thee, for thee. 4 By faith alone, for Jesus' sake, Each ransomed sinner may partake Of His abounding merit. If in His promise ye abide, By faith shall ye be justified And blessed with His free Spirit. His righteousness the just shall own By faith alone, by faith alone.
