George Cooper

1820 - 1876 Composer of "ST. SEPULCHRE" in Methodist Tune Book Cooper (actually George Cooper III) came from a long line of organists who played at St. Sepulchre’s Church, Newgate Street, London, throughout the 19th Century. One of his earliest appointments was to St. Benet’s Church in Upper Thames Street, where later John Stainer officiated (1854-56). Cooper was also one of the organists of the Chapel Royal, was organist and music master at Christ’s Hospital, and in 1843, he succeeded his father as assistant to John Goss at St. Paul’s. He was the first editor to supervise the production of the new Wesleyan Tune-Book (both he and his successor Gauntlett passed away while the work was in progress; it was finished by Edward Hopkins). Amzi Chapin

1768 - 1835 Person Name: Chapin Composer of "FOREST" in The Good Old Songs Amzi Chapin USA 1768-1835. Born in Springfield. MA, into a family of cabinetmakers, jewelers, and watchmakers, he followed in the same trade in Hartford, CT. for several years, then moved to New Haven, CT. He embarked on a career as an itinerant singing teacher, composer, and cabinetmaker in the South and Midwest. He married Hannah Power and they had eight children. They lived in Mount Pleasant, PA, where he taught singing and farmed for the next 30 years. He also founded a mill. He co-founded the Presbyterian congregation in Northfield Township. Chapin taught singing schools in VA, NC, KY, and PA. In 1831, he and his family moved to Northfield, OH. His older brother, Lucius, was also a singing teacher, and they were among the first to teach sacred music west of the Allegheny Mountains. John Perry

McIntosh ========== Rigdon (Robert) McCoy McIntosh USA 1836-1899 Born at Maury County, TN, into a farming family, he attended Jackson College in Columbia, TN, graduating in 1854. He studied music under Asa Everett in Richmond, VA, and became a traveling singing school teacher. He also served briefly in the Civil War. He wrote several hymns during this period of his life. In 1860 he married Sarah McGlasson, and they had a daughter, Loulie Everett. In 1875 he was appointed head of the Vanderbilt University Music Department in Nashville, TN. In 1877 he joined the faculty of Emory College, Oxford, GA. In 1895 he left Emory College to devote his time to the R M McIntosh Publishing Company. He also served as music editor of the Methodist Episcopal Church South Publishing House for over 30 years. His song book publications include: “Good news” (1876), “Light & life” (1881), “Prayer & praise” (1883), “New life” (1879), “New life #2” (1886), and “Songs of service” (1896). Kerr, Robert P., D.D., b. at Greensborough, Alabama, graduated at Union Theological Seminary, Va., 1873, and was ordained by the Presbytery of Lafayette, 1874. His Hymns of the Ages, a collection on conservative Evangelical lines which hardly justified its title, was published in N.Y., 1891.
