Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals First Line: When troubles come and hopes depart Lyrics: 1 When troubles come and hopes depart, in mercy, Lord, arise; the ruined landscape of my heart lies bare before your eyes. 2 Where human pride is humbled low and crushed beneath your hand, your solace, Lord, again bestow and heal this broken land. 3 Though darkness seems to hide your face amid earth's sin and pain, break through the clouds, O God of grace, restore my soul again. 4 The banner of your love unfurled proclaims a shelt'ring arm; no foes in all this fallen world can bring your people harm. 5 In holiness your word goes forth from that eternal throne: to east and west, to south and north, your glory rules alone. 6 Frail human strength is nothing worth, beset by evil pow'rs, yet with the God of all the earth the victory is ours! From Depths of Woe I Cry to Thee

Author: Martin Luther; Catherine Winkworth Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 37 hymnals Lyrics: 1 From depths of woe I cry to thee, Lord, hear me, I implore thee. Bend down thy gracious ear to me, my prayer let come before thee. If thou rememb'rest each misdeed, if each should have its rightful meed, who may abide thy presence? 2 Thy love and grace alone avail to blot out my transgression; the best and holiest deeds must fail to break sin's dread oppression. Before thee none can boasting stand, but all must fear thy strict demand and live alone by mercy. 3 Therefore my hope is in the LORD and not in mine own merit; it rests upon his faithful Word to them of contrite spirit that he is merciful and just; this is my comfort and my trust. His help I wait with patience. 4 And though it tarry till the night and till the morning waken, my heart shall never doubt his might nor count itself forsaken. Do thus, O ye of Israel's seed, ye of the Spirit born indeed; wait for your God's appearing. 5 Though great our time and sore our woes, his grace much more aboundeth; his helping love no limit knows, our utmost need it soundeth. Our Shepherd good and true is He, who will at last his Israel free from all their sin and sorrow. Topics: Forgiveness; God as Merciful; Grâce; Guilt; Holy innocents; Hope; Lenten; Love; Mercy; Patience; Penitential; Prayer; Prophecy; Repentance; Sickness; Sin Scripture: Psalm 130 Used With Tune: AUS TIEFER NOT

Sing to the LORD, Ye Distant Lands

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 199 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Sing to the LORD, ye distant lands, ye tribes of ev'ry tongue; his new-discovered grace demands a new and nobler song. Tell all the nations, "Jesus reigns, God's own almighty Son; his pow'r the sinking world sustains, and grace surrounds his throne." 2 Let heav'n proclaim the joyful day; let joy on earth be seen; let cities shine in bright array, and fields in cheerful green. Let joy above all joys surprise the islands of the sea; ye mountains sink; ye valleys rise; prepare the LORD his way. 3 Behold, he comes, he comes to bless the nations as their God, to show the world his righteousness, and send his truth abroad. But when his voice shall raise the dead, and bid the world draw near, how will the guilty nations dread to see their judge appear. Why Do You Stand So Far Away, O LORD

Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 3 hymnals First Line: Why do you stand so far away, O LORD? Lyrics: 1 Why do you stand so far away, O LORD? Why do you hide yourself in troubled times? In arrogance the wicked trap the poor; they catch the weak in schemes they have devised. 2 The wicked boast about their hearts' desires; the covetous renounce and spurn the LORD. In pride they see no need to seek for aid; in all their thoughts they say, "There is no God." 3 They prosper and in pride ignore your law; at all their foes they only puff in scorn. Within their hearts they think, "I am secure; throughout my life my happiness is sure." 4 Their mouths are filled with oaths and lies and threats; beneath their tongues are evil thoughts and deeds. They lie in ambush near the village street; the innocent they murder and defeat. 5 The helpless one is crushed and trampled down; another victim falls beneath their might. At heart they think, "God has forgotten this; he hides his face, so he will never see." 6 Arise, O LORD, lift up your hand, O God! Do not forget the helpless and the poor. Why do the wicked proudly scoff at God and say, "He will not call me to account"? 7 O God, you note injustice and distress that you may take it all into your hands. The helpless ones commit themselves to you, for you give help to orphans and the poor. 8 O break the wicked evildoers' arm! Seek out the secret sin they try to hide. The LORD is King through all eternity; all sinful ones will perish from his land. 9 LORD, you will hear the longing of the meek; strengthen their hearts, incline your ear to them. You will defend the orphan and the poor that evil ones may terrify no more. Topics: Bitterness; Face of the Lord; Friends; God as Distant; God as Hidden; Lament; Lord's Prayer 1st Petition (Hallowed by your name); Questioning; Rescue ; Sorrow; Ten Commandments 2nd Commandment (You shall not misuse the name); Terror Scripture: Psalm 10 Used With Tune: FLENTGE Text Sources: The Book of Psalms for Singing, 1975, alt.
