See Christ, Who on the River's Shore

Author: Christopher Idle Hymnal: Singing the New Testament #14 (2008) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 See Christ, who on the river's shore with John the Baptist stood, his secret in the name he bore: the holy Lamb of God. See all his body washed and wet, baptized in Jordan's flow, as here his shame and glory meet, his pain and triumph show. 2 See Christ submits himself to John; the Lord bows to his slave! See where he stoops, the sinless one, to share a sinner's grave! See him arising from the stream where all the past now dies; for yet a colder tomb he came and now calls us to rise. 3 See Christ, to whom the Father speaks as his beloved Son; Messiah's chosen task he takes, the servant's work begun. See him on whom the Spirit fell, descending like a dove, in whom we find a springing well of peace and joy and love. 4 See Christ through forty hungry days with sand and stones for bed; in lonely trials and desert ways with him may we be led. See him, the anointed Lamb who died, to whom all praise we bring; see Christ baptized, Christ crucified, and Christ our reigning King! When People Learned of Jesus Christ

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Come Away with Me #15 (1998) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: When people learned of Jesus Christ, they came to hear him preach. They longed to find out for themselves what Jesus had to teach. They pondered over parables, and gave his words much thought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He turned the water into wine and multiplied the bread, becalmed the heavy, stormy seas, and even raised the dead. The people wondered at the signs and miracles he wrought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He answered scribes and Pharisees who would with him contend. He healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and was the sinners' friend. They marveled at his prophecies, the healing that he brought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. We may not work a miracle, fulfill a prophet's role, encourage sinners to repent, or make the wounded whole, but, as disciples, we can tell we've found what all have sought: the never-ending love of God, the love that Jesus taught. Dear God, at home, at work, at school, in all of life, we pray, help us be teachers who reveal your love for us today, that all the world may recognize the spirit that is caught when his disciples try to live the love that Jesus taught. The shadows of the evening hours

Author: A. A. Procter Hymnal: The Church Hymnal #15a (1898) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 The shadows of the evening hours Fall from the darkening sky; Upon the fragrance of the flowers The dews of evening lie. 2 Before Thy throne, O Lord of heaven, We kneel at close of day; Look on Thy children from on high, And hear us while we pray. 3 The sorrows of Thy servants, Lord, Oh, do not Thou despise, But let the incense of our prayers Before Thy mercy rise. 4 The brightness of the coming night Upon the darkness rolls; With hopes of future glory chase The shadows on our souls. 5 Slowly the rays of daylight fade: So fade within our heart The hopes of earthly love and joy, That one by one depart. 6 Slowly the bright stars, one by one, Within the heavens shine: Give us, O Lord, fresh hopes in heaven, And trust in things divine. 7 Let peace, O Lord, Thy peace, O God, Upon our souls descend; From midnight fears, and perils, Thou Our trembling hearts defend: 8 Give us a respite from our toil; Calm and subdue our woes; Through the long day we labor, Lord, Oh, give us now repose. Amen. Topics: Daily Prayer Evening; Peace Languages: English Tune Title: ST. LEONARD
