O God, to Thine Anointed King

Author: Anonymous Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1. O God, to Thine anointed king Give truth and righteousness; Thy people He will justly judge And give the poor redress. Then every fruitful mountainside Shall yield its rich increase, And righteousness in all the land Shall bear the fruit of peace. 2. The poor man’s cause He will maintain, The needy He will bless, And He will break the strength of those Who would the poor oppress. So men shall fear Thee while the sun In daily splendor glows, And through all ages, while the moon On earth its light bestows. 3. Like rain upon the newborn grass, That falls refreshingly, Like gentle showers that cheer the earth, So shall His coming be. The righteous in His glorious day Shall flourish and increase, The earth, until the moon shall fade, Shall have abundant peace. O Lord, Who Came to Earth to Show

Author: Milburn Price Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O Lord, who came to earth to show Your way of truth and love, who ministered to varied needs with grace sent from above, equip us likewise now to go, and thus fulfill Your word compelling us to minister: give us Your love, O Lord. 2 Enable us to hear the cries of those who, in despair, call out for someone who will hear, for someone who will care. Then, hearing, let us actively pursue with one accord a ministry which meets their needs: give us Your love, O Lord. 3 With superficial gestures, we have tried to comfort those who struggle for fulfillment in the midst f all life's throes. Invest in us a higher cause which, shown by Christ, our Lord, makes us to seek their deepest needs: give us Your love, O Lord. 4 "Your kingdom come on earth," we pray with hearts which are resolved, and yet, in human problems still we fail to be involved; the ministries of comfort, peace, and hope may we afford to all who struggle in their needs: give us Your love, O Lord. A Man Lay Beaten, Left for Dead

Author: Andrew Pratt Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 A man lay beaten, left for dead, his shattered, broken frame spoke of the kicks that brought him down, the glows that bruise and maim. The ones who might have offered help could give a reason why they left him lying in the road, they left him there to die. 2 They spoke of fear, they passed him by, they left him in his pain; too busy or too self-absorbed to turn and look again. The ones who could have helped walked on, they passed and soon forgot, but one who knew the cost of love knelt down and shared his lot. 3 When people challenge or deny our rights and break us down, when others leave us desolate and friends just laugh or frown; the foreigners that we reject, the ones we would despise, can bring the grace of God to bear, bring love into our lives. 4 And when we see another's need and feel another's loss, God gives us courage and the strength, the memory of your cross; God give compassion, selfless care, and strip away our pride, then give us each the grace to love the ones we might deride. Thou From The Cradle To The Grave

Author: Jean B. de Santeüil, 1630-1697; Robert Campbell, 1814-1868 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 Thou from the cradle to the grave For us to pain condemned, A grateful heart Thy people give To praise their suffering friend— That Friend who longed for man to die, While yet in Mary’s womb; That God who took humanity, To lay it in the tomb. 2 He comes a babe, though Lord of all, In cold and want to lie; His cradle is the oxen’s stall, The straw His drapery: ’Tis love that makes the Innocent The pains of guilt to bear, The Giver of the law content Its penalty to share. 3 That precious blood which gently flows And speaks the law obeyed, Foreshadoweth His dying woes A little while delayed. The sword that slays the sucklings now Unsheathèd must remain, To pierce His heart and lay Him low With those already slain. 4 His chosen race their God expel— An exile poor He flies; In heathen lands He seeks to dwell Who made the earth and skies. O King of suffering, King of love, All praise be paid to Thee, With Father, Spirit, God above, Eternal Trinity.
