Johann Christian Jacobi

1670 - 1750 Scripture: Isaiah 25:6-10 Translator (English) of "Christ Jesus Lay" in Voices Together Jacobi, John Christian, a native of Germany, was born in 1670, and appointed Keeper of the Royal German Chapel, St. James's Palace, London, about 1708. He held that post for 42 years, and died Dec. 14, 1750. He was buried in the Church of St. Paul's, Covent Garden. His publications included :— (1) A Collection of Divine Hymns, Translated from the High Dutch. Together with their Proper Tunes and Thorough Bass. London: Printed and Sold by J. Young, in St. Paul’s Churchyard; . . . 1720. This edition contains 15 hymns. Two years later this collection, with a few changes in the text and much enlarged, was republished as (2) Psalmodia Germanica; or a Specimen of Divine Hymns. Translated from the High Dutch. Together with their Proper Tunes and Thorough Bass. London: J. Young . 1722. This edition contained 62 hymns, of which 3 ("He reigns, the Lord our Saviour reigns"; "Is God withdrawing"? "Shepherds rejoice") and the first stanza of another ("Raise your devotion, mortal tongues," from "Hosannah to the Prince of Life") were taken from I. Watts. A second part was added in 1725, and was incorporated with the former part in 1732. London, G. Smith. Baxter, Jr. Scripture: Isaiah 25:8 Author of "God Shall Wipe Away All Tears" in Praise for the Lord (Expanded Edition) Jesse Randall (Pap) Baxter, Jr. (1887-1960) Born: December 8, 1887, Lebanon, Alabama. Died: January 21, 1960. Baxter grew up in De­Kalb Coun­ty, Al­a­ba­ma. In 1926, he bought part of Vir­gil Stamps’ Gos­pel mu­sic firm, which be­came the Stamps-Bax­ter Mu­sic and Print­ing Com­pa­ny, one of the most suc­cess­ful Gos­pel mu­sic pub­lish­ers of the ear­ly 20th Century. Bax­ter ran the com­pa­ny’s Chat­ta­noo­ga, Ten­nes­see, of­fice un­til Stamps’ death in 1940, then moved to Dall­as, Tex­as, to run the main of­fice. Af­ter Bax­ter’s death, his wife, Clarice, ran the bus­i­ness un­til she died; it was then sold to Zon­der­van. Bax­ter was in­duct­ed in­to the South­ern Gos­pel Music As­so­ci­a­tion Hall of Fame in 1997. Born at Simsboro, LA, the eldest of four children. Not much information was found regarding his life. He was musically inclined. He married Linnie Gillis, the 9th of 11 children in her family. Doan was ed­u­cat­ed at Har­vard Un­i­ver­si­ty (BA 1942); Lu­ther­an The­o­lo­gi­cal Sem­in­a­ry (BD 1955); the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Penn­syl­van­ia (MA 1962, though he re­turned it to the school to pro­test their po­lic­ies); and Wag­ner Col­lege (DD, late 1970s). He served as a cam­pus pas­tor in Phil­a­del­phia, Penn­syl­van­ia (1955-61); North­east­ern Di­rect­or of the Na­tion­al Lu­ther­an Cam­pus Min­is­try; and pastor of the Lu­ther­an Church of the Ho­ly Com­mun­ion, Phil­a­del­phia (1984-95).
