Robert Cull

b. 1949 Hymnal Number: 536 Author of "Open Our Eyes, Lord" in The Worshiping Church Rv Robert Marcus Cull USA 1949-present, Born at Los Angeles, CA, he was musically inclined. At age six he played piano in his parents’ church, and over the next few years learned to play more than a dozen different instruments. He attended Southern CA College (now Vanguard U), Costa Mesa, CA, an Assembly of God institution. He also attended Calvary Chapel, a nearby church, that featured a similar type of music worship. He became a part of the 1960s-70s ‘Jesus Movement’ in CA. That movement was a response to two groups, hippies and evangelicals, who did not feel included in the mainline Christian community. He married Joy Strange, a singer with Maranatha. In 1971 Maranatha began publishing its music as a non-profit outreach media. It eventually morphed into a media outlet association of nondenominational groups. Cull joined one of its singing groups, ‘The Accents’, dedicated to performing new Christian songs published by Maranatha. He published two albums of music with the group. After marrying, he and his wife sang together and published four more albums (1979-1984), but later divorced. In 1975, in Hawaii, Cull was invited to give a one-hour midday solo concert at a parochial school. He arrived early and tried to speak with some of the faculty members. None of them wanted to talk about Jesus. He sat down at the piano before concert time and thought, all I am going to do is sing about Jesus, so I will likely bore them to death. He prayed, “Lord, we need to see the real Jesus, and no one here seems to know you”. About that time, his song came to mind, and he quickly wrote it down, finishing it in about 10 minutes. He then sang it to the school gathering for the first time. When Cull later returned to his church in CA, someone had already brought his song back and taught it to the congregation. Maranatha asked him to prepare orchestrations for the song and record it. It has since become his most well-known song, sung throughout the Christian world. Cull later became the pastor of Midcoast Country Chapel, Wiscasset, ME. He retired in 2014. The congregation has since disbanded. Cull moved to Friday Harbor, WA, and now lives at Eastsound, WA. 1905 - 1992 Person Name: John W. He served as Vice President of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and was a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Dorothy Frances Gurney

1858 - 1932 Person Name: Dorothy F. Gurney Hymnal Number: 388 Author of "O Perfect Love" in The Worshiping Church Blomfield, Dorothy F. , was born at 3 Finsbury Circus, Oct. 4, 1858. Miss Blomfield is the eldest daughter of the late Rev. F. G. Blomfield, sometime Rector of St. Andrew's Undershaft, London, and granddaughter of the late Dr. Blomfield, Bishop of London. Her very beautiful hymn for Holy Matrimony, “O perfect Love, all human thought transcending," was written for her sister's marriage in 1883, and was intended to be sung to Strength and Stay, in Hymns Ancient & Modern, No. 12. Subsequently it was set as an anthem by J. Barnby for the marriage of the Duke of Fife with the Princess Louise of Wales, on July 27, 1889. John H. Sammis

1846 - 1919 Hymnal Number: 523 Author of "Trust and Obey" in The Worshiping Church John H. Sammis was born in Brooklyn. He moved to Logansport, Indiana when ye was 22, where he was converted to Christianity. He was active in the Y.M.C.A., serving as secretary for the Terre Haute Association and later becoming State Secretary. After this, he studied at Lane and McCormack seminaries and was ordained in the Presbyterian church at Glidden, Iowa. He also pastored churches in Indianapolis, Grand Haven, MI, Red Wing and St. Paul, Minn. In 1909 he became associated with the Los Angeles Bible Institute. He wrote more that 100 hymns. William Mercer

1811 - 1873 Hymnal Number: 366 Author (st. 2, 4) of "God, Who Made the Earth and Heaven" in The Worshiping Church Mercer, William, M.A., born at Barnard Castle, Durham, 1811, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A., 1835). In 1840 he was appointed Incumbent of St. George's, Sheffield. He died at Leavy Greave, Sheffield, Aug. 21, 1873. His principal work was:—- The Church Psalter and Hymn Book, comprising The Psalter, or Psalms of David, together with the Canticles, Pointed for Chanting; Four Hundred Metrical Hymns and Six Responses to the Commandments; the whole united to appropriate Chants and Tunes, for the use of Congregations and Families, by the Rev. William Mercer, M.A. . .. Assisted by John Goss, Esq…., 1854; enlarged 1856; issued without music, 1857; quarto edition 1860; rearranged edition (Oxford edition) 1864; Appendix 1872. For many years this collection was at the head of all the hymn-books in the Church of England, both in circulation and influence. Its large admixture of Wesleyan hymns, and of translations from the German gave it a distinct character of its own, and its grave and solemn music was at one time exceedingly popular. To it Mercer contributed several translations and paraphrases from the Latin and German, the latter mainly from the Moravian hymn-books; but his hymn-writing was far less successful than his editing, and has done nothing to increase his reputation. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Thomas Helmore

1811 - 1890 Hymnal Number: 133 Composer of "VENI EMMANUEL" in The Worshiping Church A graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford, England, Thomas Helmore (b. Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England, 1811; d. Westminster, London, England, 1890) was ordained a priest in the Church of England, but his main contribution to the church was in music. He was precentor at St. Mark's College, Chelsea (1842-1877), and master of the choristers in the Chapel Royal for many years. He promoted unaccompanied choral services and played an important part in the revival of plainchant in the Anglican Church. Helmore was involved in various publications of hymns, chants, and carols, including A Manual of Plainsong (1850) and The Hymnal Noted (with John Mason Neale). Bert Polman

Fred Bock

1939 - 1998 Hymnal Number: 700 Arranger of "SYMPHONY" in The Worshiping Church Fred Bock was born in Great Neck, New York. He played the piano at age six and organ at age twelve. He attended Ithaca College, receiving his B.A. in Music Education. He earned his Masters and did Doctoral work in Church Music at the University of Southern California. Fred Bock was one of the most recognized and respected leaders in the world of church music. He was an accomplished composer, arranger, clinician, studio musician, organist, pianist, choral director and music publisher. He was the founder and director of publications for the music publishing division of Word, Inc. and later started Gentry Publication and other publishers of church music. He was also minister of music at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, where he served for 18 years. Before that, he served as minister of music at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles for 14 years. Bernard, of Cluny

1100 - 1199 Person Name: Bernard of Cluny Hymnal Number: 754 Author of "Jerusalem the Golden" in The Worshiping Church Bernard of Morlaix, or of Cluny, for he is equally well known by both titles, was an Englishman by extraction, both his parents being natives of this country. He was b., however, in France very early in the 12th cent, at Morlaix, Bretagne. Little or nothing is known of his life, beyond the fact that he entered the Abbey of Cluny, of which at that time Peter the Venerable, who filled the post from 1122 to 1156, was the head. There, so far as we know, he spent his whole after-life, and there he probably died, though the exact date of his death, as well as of his birth is unrecorded. The Abbey of Cluny was at that period at the zenith of its wealth and fame. Its buildings, especially its church (which was unequalled by any in France); the services therein, renowned for the elaborate order of their ritual; and its community, the most numerous of any like institution, gave it a position and an influence, such as no other monastery, perhaps, ever reached. Everything about it was splendid, almost luxurious. It was amid such surroundings that Bernard of Cluny spent his leisure hours in composing that wondrous satire against the vices and follies of his age, which has supplied—and it is the only satire that ever did so—some of the most widely known and admired hymns to the Church of today. His poem De Contemptu Mundi remains as an imperishable monument of an author of whom we know little besides except his name, and that a name overshadowed in his own day and in ours by his more illustrious contemporary and namesake, the saintly Abbot of Clairvaux. The poem itself consists of about 3000 lines in a meter which is technically known as Leonini Cristati Trilices Dactylici, or more familiarly—to use Dr. Neale's description in his Mediaeval Hymns, p. 69—" it is a dactylic hexameter, divided into three parts, between which a caesura is inadmissible. The hexameter has a tailed rhyme, and feminine leonine rhyme between the two first clauses, thus :— " Tune nova gloria, pectora sobria, clarificabit: Solvit enigmata, veraque sabbata, continuabit, Patria luminis, inscia turbinis, inscia litis, Cive replebitur, amplificabitur Israelitis." The difficulty of writing at all, much more of writing a poem of such length in a metre of this description, will be as apparent to all readers of it, as it was to the writer himself, who attributes his successful accomplishment of his task entirely to the direct inspiration of the Spirit of God. "Non ego arroganter," he says in his preface, "sed omnino humiliter, et ob id audenter affirmaverim, quia nisi spiritus sapicntiae et intellectus mihi affuisset et afftuxisset, tarn difficili metro tarn longum opus con-texere non sustinuissem." As to the character of the metre, on the other hand, opinions have widely differed, for while Dr. Neale, in his Mediaeval Hymns, speaks of its "majestic sweetness," and in his preface to the Rhythm of Bernard de Morlaix on the Celestial Country, says that it seems to him "one of the loveliest of mediaeval measures;" Archbishop Trench in his Sac. Lat. Poetry, 1873. p. 311, says "it must be confessed that" these dactylic hexameters "present as unattractive a garb for poetry to wear as can well be imagined;" and, a few lines further on, notes "the awkwardness and repulsiveness of the metre." The truth perhaps lies between these two very opposite criticisms. Without seeking to claim for the metre all that Dr. Neale is willing to attribute to it, it may be fairly said to be admirably adapted for the purpose to which it has been applied by Bernard, whose awe-stricken self-abasement as he contemplates in the spirit of the publican, “who would not so much as lift up his eyes unto heaven," the joys and the glory of the celestial country, or sorrowfully reviews the vices of his age, or solemnly denounces God's judgments on the reprobate, it eloquently pourtrays. So much is this the case, that the prevailing sentiment of the poem, that, viz., of an awful apprehension of the joys of heaven, the enormity of sin, and the terrors of hell, seems almost wholly lost in such translations as that of Dr. Neale. Beautiful as they are as hymns, "Brief life is here our portion," "Jerusalem the Golden," and their companion extracts from this great work, are far too jubilant to give any idea of the prevailing tone of the original. (See Hora Novissima.) In the original poem of Bernard it should be noted that the same fault has been remarked by Archbishop Trench, Dean Stanley, and Dr. Neale, which may be given in the Archbishop's words as excusing at the same time both the want, which still exists, of a very close translation of any part, and of a complete and continuous rendering of the whole poem. "The poet," observes Archbishop Trench, "instead of advancing, eddies round and round his object, recurring again and again to that which he seemed thoroughly to have discussed and dismissed." Sac. Lat. Poetry, 1873, p. 311. On other grounds also, more especially the character of the vices which the author lashes, it is alike impossible to expect, and undesirable to obtain, a literal translation of the whole. Russell Kelso Carter

1849 - 1928 Person Name: R. Kelso Carter Hymnal Number: 306 Author of "Standing on the Promises" in The Worshiping Church Russel Kelso Carter was a professor in the Pennsylvania Military College of Chester. While there he was licensed to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church. He became very active in leading camp meetings and revivals. After failing health forced him to abandon this work, he studied and became a medical doctor as well as a writer. He wrote novels as well as hymns.
