Author: John White Chadwick, 1840-1904 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #305a (2010) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1 Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round of circling planets singing on their way, guide of the nations from the night profound into the glory of the perfect day; rule in our hearts, that we may ever be guided and strengthened and upheld by thee. 2 We are of thee, the children of thy love, the brothers of thy well-belovèd Son; descend, O Holy Spirit, like a dove into our hearts, that we may be as one: as one with thee, to whom we ever tend, as one with him, our Brother and our Friend. 3 We would be one in hatred of all wrong, one in our love of all things sweet and fair, one with the joy that breaketh into song, one with the grief that trembles into prayer, one in the power that makes thy children free to follow truth, and thus to follow thee. 4 O clothe us with thy heavenly armour, Lord, thy trusty shield, thy sword of love divine; our inspiration be thy constant word; we ask no victories that are not thine; give or withhold, let pain or pleasure be; enough to know that we are serving thee. Christians, awake, salute the happy morn

Author: John Byrom, 1692-1763 Hymnal: Together in Song #306 (1999) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1 Christians, awake, salute the happy morn, whereon the Saviour of the world was born; rise to adore the mystery of love, which hosts of angels chanted from above; with them the joyful tidings first begun of God incarnate and the Virgin's son. 2 Then to the watchful shepherds it was told, who heard the angelic herald's voice, 'Behold, I bring good tidings of a Saviour's birth to you and all the nations on the earth; this day has God fulfilled his promised word, this day is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord.' 3 He spoke; and straightway the celestial choir in hymns of joy, unknown before, conspire. The praises of redeeming love they sang, and heaven's whole orb with hallelujahs rang: God's highest glory was their anthem still, peace upon earth to people of good-will. 4 To Bethlehem straight the enlightened shepherds ran to see the wonder of our God made man, and found, with Joseph and the blessèd Maid, her son, the Saviour, in a manger laid; amazed, the wondrous story they proclaim, the first apostles of his infant fame. 5 Like Mary, let us ponder in our mind God's wondrous love in saving humankind; trace we the Babe, who has retrieved our loss, from the poor manger to the bitter cross; tread in his steps, assisted by his grace, until in heaven God's people take their place. 6 There may we hope, the angelic thrones among, to sing, redeemed, a glad triumphal song: he that was born upon this joyful day around us all his glory shall display; saved by his love, unceasing we shall sing eternal praise to heaven's almighty King. Be Still, My Soul

Author: Katrina A. D. von Schlegel; Jane Borthwick Hymnal: Hymns to the Living God #308 (2017) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 First Line: Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side Lyrics: 1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side; bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; leave to thy God to order and provide; in ev'ry change He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav'nly Friend thro' thorny ways leads to a joyful end. 2 Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake to guide the future as He has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; all now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below. 3 Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart, and all is darkened in the veil of tears, then shalt thou better know His love, His heart, who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears. Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay from His own fullness all He takes away. 4 Be still, my soul: the hour is hast'ning on when we shall be forever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last. Topics: Comfort, Death, and Glory Languages: English Tune Title: FINLANDIA

Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart

Author: George Croly, 1780-1860 Hymnal: African American Heritage Hymnal #312 (2001) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1 Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; Wean it from earth; through all its pulses move; Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, And make me love Thee as I ought to love. 2 I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, No sudden rending of the veil of clay, No angel visitant, no op'ning skies; But take the dimness of my soul away. 3 Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh; Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer. 4 Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love, One holy passion filling all my frame; The kindling of the heav'n-descended Dove, My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.
