Tho' Wicked Men Grow Rich Or Great

Author: Francis Hopkinson, 1737-1791 Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals First Line: Tho’ wicked men grow rich or great Lyrics: 1 Tho’ wicked men grow rich or great, Yet let not their successful state Thy anger, or thy envy, raise; For they, cut down, like tender grass, Or like young flowers, away shall pass, Whose blooming beauty soon decays. 2 Depend on God, and Him obey; So thou within the Land shalt stay, Secure from danger, and from want; Make His commands thy chief delight; And He, thy duty to requite, Shall all thy earnest wishes grant. 3 In all thy ways trust thou the Lord, And He will needful help afford, To perfect every just design; He’ll make, like light, serene and clear, Thy clouded innocence appear, And as a mid-day sun to shine. 4 With quiet mind on God depend, And patiently for Him attend; Nor let thy anger fondly rise, Tho’ wicked men with wealth abound, And with success the plots are crowned, Which they maliciously devise. 5 From anger cease, and wrath forsake; Let no ungoverned passion make Thy wavering heart espouse their crime: For God shall sinful men destroy; Whilst only they the land enjoy, Who trust on Him, and wait His time. 6 How soon shall wicked men decay! Their place shall vanish quite away, Nor by the strictest search be found; Whilst humble souls possess the earth, Rejoicing still with godly mirth, With peace and plenty always crowned. 7 While sinful crowds, with false design, Against the righteous few combine, And gnash their teeth, and threatening stand; God shall their empty plots deride, And laugh at their defeated pride: He sees their ruin near at hand. 8 They draw the sword, and bend the bow, The poor and needy to o’erthrow, And men of upright lives to slay: But their strong bows shall soon be broke Their sharpened weapon’s mortal stroke Thro’ their own hearts shall force its way. 9 A little, with God’s favor blest, That’s by one righteous men possessed, The wealth of many bad excels: For God supports the just man’s cause; But, as for those that break His laws, Their unsuccessful power He quells. 10 His constant care the upright guides, And over all their life presides; Their portion shall for ever last: They, when distress o’erwhelms the earth, Shall be unmoved, and e’en in dearth The happy fruits of plenty taste. 11 Not so the wicked men, and those Who proudly dare God’s will oppose: Destruction is their hapless share: Like fat of lambs, their hopes, and they, Shall in an instant melt away, And vanish into smoke and air. 12 While sinners, brought to sad decay, Still borrow on, and never pay, The just have will and power to give; For such as God vouchsafes to bless, Shall peaceably the earth possess; And those He curses, shall not live. 13 The good man’s way is God’s delight; He orders all the steps aright, Of him that moves by His command; Though he sometimes may be distressed; Yet shall he ne’er be quite oppressed; For God upholds him with His hand. 14 From my first youth, till age prevailed, I never saw the righteous failed, Or want o’ertake his numerous race, Because compassion filled his heart, And he did cheerfully impart, God made his offspring’s wealth increase. 15 With caution shun each wicked deed, In virtue’s ways with zeal proceed, And so prolong your happy days: For God, who judgment loves, does still Preserve His saints secure from ill, While soon the wicked race decays. 16 The upright shall possess the land: His portion shall for ages stand; His mouth with wisdom is supplied; His tongue by rules of judgment moves; His heart the law of God approves; Therefore his footsteps never slide. 17 In wait the watchful sinner lies, In vain the righteous to surprise; In vain, his ruin does decree: God will not him defenseless leave, To His revenge exposed, but save, And, when he’s sentenced, set him free. 18 Wait still on God; keep His commands; And thou, exalted in the land, Thy blest possession ne’er shalt quit: The wicked soon destroyed shall be, And at his dismal tragedy Thou shalt a safe spectator sit. 19 The wicked I in power have seen, And, like a bay-tree, fresh and green, That spreads its pleasant branches round; But he was gone as swift as thought; And tho’ in every place I sought, No sign or track of him I found. 20 Observe the perfect man with care, And mark all such as upright are; Their roughest days in peace shall end: While on the latter end of those, Who dare God’s sacred will oppose. A common ruin shall attend. 21 God to the just will aid afford; Their only safeguard is the Lord; Their strength, in time of need, is He: Because on Him they still depend, The Lord will timely succor send, And from the wicked set them free. God of the nations, Who hast led

Author: F. Edwards Appears in 3 hymnals Lyrics: 1 God of the nations, Who hast led Thy children since the world began, Through doubt and struggle, pain and tears, unfolding Thy eternal plan; From countless hilltops as of old The fire upon the altar flares; Through countless rites, through countless tongues, Men offer their imperfect prayers; Hasten the time of our release, Bring in the reign of truth and peace. 2 O Jesus Christ, Incarnate Son, Who bore our flesh that men might see The Vision of the Perfect Life Fashioned in their humanity; By all Thy words of heavenly truth, By all Thy deeds of mercy wrought, By all the passion of Thy cross, By the redemption Thou hast brought; Hasten the time of our release, Bring in Thy reign of truth and peace. 3 O Holy Spirit, who dost touch The prophets with Thy sacred fire, Eternal Wisdom to whose light All seekers after truth aspire; Behold the warring sons of men, The helpless by the strong oppressed, The truth with error still concealed, The evil grudgingly confessed; Hasten the time of our release, Bring in Thy reign of truth and peace. 4 O God Triune, Thy Church to-day In penitence before Thee kneels, Mourning her years of slothful ease, Her deafness to the world's appeals; Divided where she should be one, Enamoured of a lesser strife, Tithing the mint and cummin while Men perish for the Bread of Life; Hasten the time of our release, Bring in Thy reign of truth and peace. 5 Restore to us the vision, Lord, Descend with fires of Pentecost; Our tongues unloose, our hearts inflame, To preach the Gospel to the lost; Here at Thy feet our prayer is made, Here life and wealth we dedicate; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, Lord, Thy anointing we await; Hasten the time of our release, Bring in Thy reign of truth and peace. I Love the Volumes of Thy Word

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 175 hymnals Lyrics: 1. I love the volumes of Thy Word; What light and joy those leaves afford To souls benighted and distressed! Thy precepts guide my doubtful way, Thy fear forbids my feet to stray, Thy promise leads my heart to rest. 2. From the discoveries of Thy law The perfect rules of life I draw; These are my study and delight: Not honey so invites the taste, Nor gold that hath the furnace past Appears so pleasing to the sight. 3. Thy threat’nings wake my slumb’ring eyes, And warn me where my danger lies; But ’tis Thy blessèd Gospel, Lord, That makes my guilty conscience clean, Converts my soul, subdues my sin, And gives a free, but large reward. 4. Who knows the errors of his thoughts? My God, forgive my secret faults, And from presumptuous sins restrain: Accept my poor attempts of praise, That I have read Thy book of grace, And book of nature, not in vain. O God, Arise! and by Thy Might

Author: Rev. Edward A. Collier Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: O God arise! and by Thy might Lyrics: 1. O God, arise! and by Thy might Let all Thy foes be put to flight, With those that evil cherish: Drive them as smoke before Thine ire; As wax is molten by the fire, Let all that hate Thee perish. But let Thy saints with glad acclaim Sing praises to Thy holy Name, And cry with exultation. Cast up a highway smooth and wide, For Him who doth thro' deserts ride! The God of our salvation. 2. A father of the fatherless, A judge of widows in distress Is God, where He abideth. To those in solitude who live, He doth a happy household give, In homes that He provideth. The captives He from pris'n doth bring, And prosper them that they may sing Of Him and his salvation. But they, who wickedly rebel, He causeth in His wrath to dwell In lands of desolation. 3. God's chariots, on His people's side, Are myriads, myriads multiplied, With Him among them dwelling, As once He dwelt with veiled face In Sinai as His holy place, In glory all excelling. Thou hast ascended gloriously, And captive led captivity; Thine arm hath brought salvation, They come with gifts who did rebel, That God the Lord with them may dwell And be their consolation. 4. Blest be the Lord, for us He cares And day by day our burdens bears, The God of our salvation. God is to us a God of love, Who sends deliv'rance from above From death and desolation. But those who will in sin delight, He will with swift destruction smite, And make His saints victorious; Yea, them I'll bring--He saith to me-- From lands remote, from depths of sea, And make thy triumph glorious.
