Person Name: Frank De Vries Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Versifier of "In God the Father I Believe" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Frank DeVries was born in 1929 in Langsa, Indonesia. He grew up in Holland, emigrated to Canada in 1952, and in 1953 married Celia, his childhood sweetheart. He and his wife are the parents of six children, two of which are deceased. After obtaining Royal Conservatory degrees in theory and harmony, Frank and his wife moved to Grand Rapids where Frank graduated from Calvin College in 1962. Upon their return to Canada Frank taught at Pacific Christian School in Victoria, BC, and was principal at the John Knox Christian School in Wyoming, Ontario and the Houston and Vancouver Christian Schools both in BC. The author of two short novels (God. Noun or Verb? in 2006 and Frans in 2008) he has contributed articles to many Christian magazines and periodicals, and as well has composed and had published many children’s songs and hymns. He and his wife currently live in Abbotsford, BC. Canada, where they attend the Gateway Christian Reformed Church. Frank DeVries

Stephen P. Starke

b. 1955 Person Name: Stephen P. Starke, b. 1955 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Author of "O Sing of Christ" in Lutheran Service Book Rev. Stephen P. Starke has always had a heart for hymns. At a young age, Starke played hymns out of The Lutheran Hymnal and read through the hymnal to pass the time before Sunday services. Pastor Starke graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a BA. While completing his MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attempted his first hymn text and was encouraged to write more. Since that time, he has written more than 175 hymns inspired by music and the Scriptures. He has been commissioned to write hymns for special occasions, including the 125th anniversary of Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as his daughter’s wedding. Because of his extensive work as a hymnwriter, Pastor Starke received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Concordia University, Irvine, California, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. It is through the medium of hymns that Pastor Starke desires to preserve and pass on the truths of the Gospel for generations to come.

Hal H. Hopson

b. 1933 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Arranger of "SALVATION" in Christian Worship Hal H. Hopson (b. Texas, 1933) is a prolific composer, arranger, clinician, teacher and promoter of congregational song, with more than 1300 published works, especially of hymn and psalm arrangements, choir anthems, and creative ideas for choral and organ music in worship. Born in Texas, with degrees from Baylor University (BA, 1954), and Southern Baptist Seminary (MSM, 1956), he served churches in Nashville, TN, and most recently at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas. He has served on national boards of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and the Choristers Guild, and taught numerous workshops at various national conferences. In 2009, a collection of sixty four of his hymn tunes were published in Hymns for Our Time: The Collected Tunes of Hal H. Hopson. Emily Brink

1845 - 1926 Person Name: James Holmes Rosecrans Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Composer of "GLIWICE" in The Cyber Hymnal James Holmes Rosecrans studied at the Baxter University of Music in Friendship, New York. After teaching for two years, he joined the Fillmore Brothers Music House in Cincinnati, Ohio. As of 1880, he was teaching music in Douglas County, Colorado. In 1884, was an evangelist in California, and later was associated with evangelistic efforts in Texas, and taught music and Bible at Carlton College in Bonham, Texas. Charles H. Purday

Purday (1799-1885) A publisher, composer, lecturer, and writer, Purday had a special interest in church music. He published Crown Court Psalmody (1854), Church and Home Metrical Psalter and Hymnal (1860), which included SANDON, and, with Frances Havergal, Songs of Peace and Joy (1879). A precentor in the Scottish Church in Crown Court, London, Purday sang at the coronation of Queen Victoria. In the publishing field he is known as a strong proponent of better copyright laws to protect the works of authors and publishers. Bert Polman

Timothy Dudley-Smith

1926 - 2024 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smtih, b. 1926 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Author of "No Tramp of Soldiers' Marching Feet" in Lutheran Service Book Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church positions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973). I. Baltzell

1832 - 1893 Person Name: Isaiah Baltzell Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Composer of "CASTELLÓN" in The Cyber Hymnal Baltzell, Isaiah. (near Frederick, Maryland, November 26, 1832--January 16, 1893, Frederick). He was educated in the common schools, and at New Windsor Academy, Carroll County, Maryland. In 1859 he married Cecilia Caroline James at Mountain Jackson, Virginia. Originally a Lutheran, he joined the United Brethren Church in 1847, was licensed to preach by the Virginia Conference in 1854, and ordained in 1856. In 1862 he joined the Pennsylvania Conference. He was presiding elder from 1875 to 1880, and from 1883 to 1889. He was a delegate to three General Conferences, and was a trustee of Otterbein University. In 1873 he was appointed by the General Conference a member of the committee to superintend the publication of Hymns for the Sanctuary. His first compilation was Revival Songster (Baltimore, 1859). He was joint editor, with G.W.M. Rigor, or Choral Gems (1871); joint editor, with E.S. Lorenz, of Heavenly Carols, Songs of Grace, Gates of Praise, Songs of Cheer, Songs of the Kingdom, Holy Voices, Songs of Refreshing, Notes of Triumph, Garnered Sheaves, Songs of the Morning, and The Master's Praise. He was also author of music and services for special occasions, and the editor and publisher of Carols of Praise. See: Shuey, W.A. (1892).
