b. 1851 Person Name: G. E. M. Composer of "[O little town of Bethlehem!]" in Sunday Songs for Little Children George Edward Martin – Martin left his charge in St. Louis, MO, in 1898. For two years following he was pastor of the Holland Memorial Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and then spent a year and a half in rest and travel. He was installed pastor of the Kirk Street congregational Church in Lowell, Mass., March 3, 1902. He received the degree of D.D. from Wabash College in 1895, and also from Park College, MO. He is the author of “Sermons and Sermon Rhymes,” and “Sunday Songs for Little Children,” and has given much time and study to the writing of hymns and tunes for children. Burdett and Melvina Martin Burdett, George received an AB in 1881 from Harvard College. An organist, he composed organ works, piano pieces, and anthems, and was a frequent contributor to musical periodicals. He was a founding member of the American Guild of Organists. Alonzo Potter Howard lived in Longwood, Massachusetts (now part of the town of Brookline). He worked for the Merrimac Chemical Company for four decades, and was its vice president and treasurer at the time of his death. All his music was published in Boston. Custance’s par­ents were George Musg­rave Cus­tance and Eliz­a­beth Hume. In 1881, Ar­thur was stu­dy­ing in Lan­cing, Sus­sex. He then at­tend­ed Ox­ford Un­i­ver­si­ty, and in 1891, was prob­ab­ly in Pem­broke­shire, Wales. After em­i­grat­ing to Amer­i­ca, he taught La­tin and mu­sic in the pub­lic schools of Du­luth, Min­ne­so­ta (1892-1926). He served as choir mas­ter for St. Paul’s Epis­co­pal Church in Du­luth over the same time span, and was al­so an or­gan­ist and com­pos­er. Custance’s first wife, Thy­rea, died be­fore 1920.
