Luther J. Cox

1791 - 1870 Author of "An alien from God and a stranger to grace" in The Primitive Methodist Church Hymnal Cox, Luther J. (December 27, 1791--July 26, 1870). He was born on a farm in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, and died in Hampden, Maryland, his home for the last twelve years of his life. The "Bard of the American Methodist Reformation," a layman and local preacher, one of the founders of the Methodist Protestant Church, he engaged in mercantile pursuits throughout all of his active life. 1854 - 1942 Person Name: H. D'A. Champney Author of "Home, Bright Home!" in Choice Hymns of the Faith Born: Circa July 1854, District of York, Yorkshire, England. Educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and ordained an Anglican cleric, Champney served at St. Andrew the Less in Cambridge. He eventually left the Church of England and became associated with the Plymouth Brethren. As of 1881, he was living in Cambridge. Born in Fryeburg, ME, the son of a minister, he attended Weslyan University, CT, Boston University, MA,1871, and Marietta College, OH, 1886. He married Sara Jane Timanus. He served as pastor of Methodist Episcopal, Congregational, and Presbyterian churches, and was prominent in the temperance and prohibition movements. He promoted Sunday school education. He founded, and for 28 years was Superintendent of the International Reform Bureau. He authored a number of books, other works, and some hymn lyrics. He wrote on a wide variety of subjects, mostly religious. He died in Washington, D.C. of pneumonia. John Perry
