Johann Georg Ebeling

1637 - 1676 Person Name: J. G. Ebeling Hymnal Number: 177 Composer of "[All my heart this night rejoices]" in The Lutheran Hymnary Johann George Ebeling Germany 1637-1676. Born at Luneburg, Germany, he studied theology at the University of Helmstedt. He was a composer, author, editor, and collector of music. In 1660 he became head of the Hamburg Collegium, and in 1662 cantor of St. Nicholas Church in Berlin. In 1667 he begam teaching music and Greek in Stettin. He wrote choruses, chorales, cantatas, instrumentals oratorios, requiems and music for over 100 lyrics of Paul Gerhardt. He also wrote about music history. 278 works. He died in Stettin. John Perry

Christopher Tye

1497 - 1572 Person Name: C. Tye Hymnal Number: 314 Arr. from of "[There is a fountain filled with blood]" in The Lutheran Hymnary Tye, Christopher, MUS. D., born at Westminster in the reign of Henry VIII. He was celebrated as a musician, and was granted the degree of MUS. D. at Cambridge in 1545. He was musical tutor to King Edward VI., and organist of the Chapel Royal under Queen Elizabeth. Besides composing numerous anthems, he rendered the first fourteen chapters of the Acts of the Apostles into metre, which were set to music by him and sung in Edward 6th's Chapel, and published in 1553. Petrus Herbert

1530 - 1571 Person Name: P. Herbert Hymnal Number: 337 Author of "Faith is a living power from heaven" in The Lutheran Hymnary Herbert, Petrus, seems to have been a native of or resident at Fulnek in Moravia. He was ordained priest of the Brethren's Unity in 1562, became a member of the Select Council in 1567, and was latterly Consenior of the Unity. By the Unity he was entrusted with many important missions. He was sent as a deputy to confer with Calvin: and again in 1562 to arrange with Duke Christoph of Württemberg for the education at Tübingen of young men from the Bohemian Brethren. He was also one of the deputies sent to Vienna to present the revised form of the Brethren's Confession of Faith to the Emperor Maximilian II. in 1564, and in 1566 to present their new German Hymn Book. He died at Eibenschütz in 1571 (Koch, ii. 414, Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, xiii. 263-264, &c.). Herbert was one of the principal compilers of the enlarged edition of the Brethren's German Hymn Book published in 1566 as their Kirchengeseng, and contributed to it some 90 hymns. In the ed. of 1639 there are 104 hymns marked as his. His hymns are distinguished by simplicity and beauty of style. A number are translations from the Bohemian. His hymns translated into English include:— i. Die Nacht ist kommen drin wir ruhen sollen. [Evening] Written probably under the pressure of persecution and oppression. In the G. 2?., 1566, as above, in 5 stanzas of 7 lines (the last stanza being a versification of the Lord's Prayer), and thence in Wackernagel, iv. p. 442, and the Unverfälschter Liedersegen, 1851, No. 515. In J. H. Schein's Cantiona, 1627, it appears as No. 99, with an additional stanza not by Herbert, which reads— Denn wir kein besser Zuflucht konnen haben, ,Als zu dir, 0 Herr, in dem Himmel droben, Du veriest keinen, gibst Acht auff die deinen. Die dich recht meyuen," This stanza is included as stanza v. in the version in Bunsen's Versuch, 1833, No. 43. Translated as:— 1. The night is come, wherein at last we rest, in full from Bunsen by Miss Winkworth in her Lyra Germanica, 2nd Ser., 1858, p. 77, repeated as No. 105 in R. Minton Taylor's Collection, 1872. 2. Now God be with us, for the night is closing, a good translation from Bunsen, in the original metre, by Miss Winkworth, as No. 170 in her Chorale Book for England, 1863, and repeated in her Christian Singers of Germany, 1869, p. 139. This version has been included in various recent collections, though generally abridged or altered, as in the Hymnary, 1872; Thring's Collection, 1882; and in America in the Evangelical Hymnal, N. Y., 1880, &c. In Laudes Domini, N.Y., 1884, it is in two parts (Nos. 209-210), the second beginning, "Father, Thy name be praised, Thy kingdom given." This is stanza vi. with an added doxology, as in the Hymnary, 1872. Other translations are:— (1) "The night comes apace," as No. 293 in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. (2) “Lo! evening's shades to sleep invite," by H. J. Buckoll, 1842, p. 64. ii. 0 Christenmensch, merk wie sichs halt. [Faith] 1566, as above, in 18 stanzas of 4 lines, repeated in Wackernagel, iv. p. 433. In Bunsen's Versuch , 1833, No. 390 Allgemeine Gesang-Buch, 1846, No. 130), the hymn begins with stanza iii. altered to "Der Glaub’ ist ein lebend'ge Kraft," and consists of stanzas iii., viii., xi., xii., xvi., xviii. Bunsen calls it "a noble confession of the true Christian faith." Translated as:— Faith is a living power from heaven. A good translation from Bunsen by Miss Winkworth in her Lyra Germanica, 2nd ser., 1858, p. 160, and thence in her Chorale Book for England, 1863. It is repeated, more or less altered and abridged, in Kennedy, 1863; and in America in the Presbyterian Hymnal, 1874, Baptist Service of Song, 1871, &c. ii. Hymns not in English common use:— iii. Besides the above a number of hymns by Herbert (all of which appeared in the Kirchengeseng, 1566, and are included in Wackernagel’s vol. iv.) were translated in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. Charles T. Brooks

1813 - 1883 Person Name: C. T. Brooks Hymnal Number: 519 Author of "God bless our native land!" in The Lutheran Hymnary Brooks, Charles Timothy. An American Unitarian Minister, born at Salem, Mass., June 20, 1813, and graduated at Harvard, 1832, and the Divinity School, Cambridge, U.S., 1835. In that year he began his ministry at Nahant, subsequently preaching at Bangor and Augusta (Maine), Windsor (Vermont). In 1837 he became pastor of Newport, Rhode Island, and retained the same charge until 1871, when he resigned through ill-health. [Rev. F. M. Nicholas Brady

1659 - 1726 Person Name: Tate and Brady Hymnal Number: 454 Authors of "Through all the changing scenes of life" in The Lutheran Hymnary Nicholas Brady, the son of an officer in the Royalist army, was born in Brandon, Ireland, 1659. He studied at Westminster School, and at Christ Church College, oxford, and graduated at Trinity College, Dublin. He held several positions in the ministry, but later in life retired to Richmond Surrey, where he established a school. Here he translated some of the Psalms. Several volumes of his sermons and smaller works were published, but his chief work, like that of his co-colabourer Tate, was the "Metrical Version of Psalms." This version was authorized by King William in 1696, and has, since that time, taken the place of the earlier translation by Sternhold and Hopkins, which was published in 1562. The whole of the Psalms, with tunes, appeared in 1698, and a Supplement of Church Hymns in 1703. Of this version, which has little poetic merit, Montgomery says "It is nearly as inanimate as the former, though a little more refined." None of the "Metrical Psalms" are to be compared with the Psalms of the Prayer Book Psalter, and very few of them are worthy a place in a collection of hymns. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, 1872.

Arthur T. Pierson

1837 - 1911 Hymnal Number: 44 Author of "To Thee, O God, we raise " in The Lutheran Hymnary Rv Arthur Tappan Pierson DD USA 1837-1911. Born at New York City, NY, he professed faith in Christ at age 13 upon attending a Methodist revival meeting. He was educated at Hamilton College, Clinton, NY, (1857), and Union Theological Seminary (1869). He married Sarah Frances Benedict in 1860, and they had seven children: Helen, Laura, Louise, Delavan, Farrand, Edith, and Anna. He entered Presbyterian ministry in 1860. He pastored successfully at the Congregational Church, Winsted, CT, (summers of 1859 & 1869), Binghampton, NY (1860-1863), Waterford, NY (1863-1869) Fort Street Presbyterian Church, Detroit, M (1869-1882)I, and at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, PA (1883-1889), where he ran a missionary training school and developed a national reputation as a promoter of missions. While at Detroit, the largest Presbyterian Church in town, the church burned down in 1876, and services were held in a local opera house. Pierson realized he had become prideful and greedy, seeking approval of the rich. As a result, he led his wealthy congregation to reach out to the poor of Detroit. He banished the practice of pew rents, and committed to accepting his salary on a faith basis. A revival broke out as a result. In 1885, at a Bible conference sponsored by D L Moody, Pierson called on Protestant churches to launch a worldwide missionary campaign. In 1886 he authored “The crisis of missions”, the major missions promotional book of the era. He spoke on missions to a group of YMCA collegians at a summer conference convened by Moody in MA. As a result, 100 young men volunteered to be foreign missionaries, and the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions (SVM) was born. In 1889-90 he nade a missionary tour of the UK. He was editor of the ‘Missionary Review of the world’ (1888-1911), and he lectured on missions at Rutgers College in 1891 and was Duff lecturer in Scotland in 1892. He was a consulting editor for the original “Scofield Reference Bible” (1909), for his friend, C I Scofield. He was also a friend of Dwight L Moody, George Muller, Adoniram Judson Gordon, and Charles H Spurgeon, whom he succeeded in the pulpit of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, London, England, 1891-1893, when Spurgeon suffered from Bright’s disease and asked him to fill his pulpit while he recovered. When Spurgeon died, Pierson was asked to stay on in the pulpit, which he did for two more years. It is notable that Spurgeon asked Pierson to fill his pulpit, when Pierson, a Presbyterian, had not been baptized as a believer. In 1896 Pierson became convinced that believer baptism was correct, and he was then baptized by Spurgeon’s brother, James, at the age of 58. This caused Pierson’s excommunication from the Presbyterian Church, but he continued to worship as a Presbyterian. Pierson spoke with Moody at the Northfield, England, Conferences, and was also a speaker at the Keswick convention, where holiness piety was promoted. Pierson was influential in convincing several Nobel Peace Prize winners to give their lives to missions. Filling several pulpit positions around the world as an urban pastor, he cared passionately for the poor. He was also a pioneer advocate of faith missions, determined to see the world evangelized in his generation. Prior to 1870 there had been only about 2000 missionaries from the U.S. in full-time service, roughly 10% engaged in work among native Americans. In the 1880s a great movement of foreign missions began, in part due to the work of Pierson. He acted as elder statesman of the student missionary movement and was the leading evangelical advocate of foreign missions in the late 19th century. When liberalism began seeping through mainline denominations, Pierson joined other concerned Christian leaders in publishing “The fundamentals”, a series of booklets designed to answer the critics of Christianity. Because of his apologetic abilities, Pierson was invited to write five of the major articles. Each booklet was distributed freely to pastors throughout America, marking the beginning of the Fundamental-Modernist Controversy in American churches. Eventually the booklets were combined into a twelve volume set, available today as a five-volume set. Pierson was called “the Father of Fundamentalism”. In 1898 he wrote a book, “In Christ Jesus”, concluding that a preposition followed by a proper name was the key to understanding the entire New Testament. He was an advocate of ‘day-age creationism’. He pastored at Christ Church, London, England (1902-1903). After retiring, he continued to preach at churches at home and abroad. He visited Korea in 1910 where he taught the Bible in a few churches and was instrumental in founding the Pierson Memorial Bible Institute (presently Pyeongtaek University). Many pastors and scholars came from it. That year he set out to tour missions in East Asia, but grew ill and returned to Brooklyn, NY where he died. It is said that he preached 13,000+ sermons, wrote over 50 books, and he gave Bible lectures as part of a transatlantic preaching ministry that made him famous in Scotland, England, and Korea. All of Pierson’s children professed conversion to Christianity as teens and served as missionaries, pastors, or lay leaders. Herbert Stephen Irons

1834 - 1905 Person Name: H.S. Irons Hymnal Number: 609 Composer of "[Jerusalem my happy home]" in The Lutheran Hymnary Born: January 19, 1834, Canterbury, Kent, England. Died: June 29, 1905, Nottingham, England. Irons was a nephew of the brothers Stephen & George Elvey. He became a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral under T. E. Jones. After studying music under Stephen Elvey at Oxford, he was appointed organist at St. Columba’s College, a large public school at Rathfarnham, near Dublin, Ireland. He stayed there only a few months before being offered the position of organist at Southwell Minister. From Southwell, he went to Chester as assistant organist to Frederic Gunton. Three years later, he accepted an appointment at St. Andrew’s Church, Nottingham, where he remained until his death. --www.hymntime.com/tch

Georg Weissel

1590 - 1635 Person Name: G. Wiessel Hymnal Number: 158 Author of "Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates" in The Lutheran Hymnary Weissel, Georg, son of Johann Weissel, judge and afterwards burgomaster at Doranau, near Königsberg, was born at Domnau in 1590. He studied at the University of Königsberg, from 1608 to 1611, and thereafter, for short periods, at Wittenberg, Leipzig, Jena, Strassburg, Basel and Marburg In 1614 he was appointed rector of the school at Friedland near Domnau, but resigned this post after three years, and returned to Königsberg to resume his studies in theology. Finally, in 1623, he became pastor of the newly erected Altrossgart church at Königsberg, where he remained till his death, on August 1, 1635. Weissel was one of the most important of the earlier hymn-writers of Prussia. His hymns, about 20 in all, are good in style, moderate in length, and varied in metre. The earliest seem to have been written for use at the consecration of the Altrossgart church on the 2nd Sunday in Advent, 1623. The majority are for the greater festivals of the Christian year. The best are No. ii. below, and those for the dying. They appeared mostly in the Königsberg hymn-books, 1639-1650, and in the Preussische Fest-Lieder, pt. i., Elbing, 1642; pt. ii., Königsberg, 1644 [Berlin Library]. Those of Weissel's hymns which have passed into English are:— i. Im finstern Stall, o W under gross. Christmas. First published in B. First published in the Preussische Fest-Lieder, pt. i., 1642, No. 2, in 5 stanzas of 8 lines, marked as "On the 1st Sunday of Advent." The translations in common use are:— 1. Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates. This is a good and full translation by Miss Winkworth, in herLyra Germanica, 1st Ser., 1855, p. 10, and her Chorale Book for England, 1863, No. 25. Another translation is: "Lift up, lift up your heads, ye gates," by G. Moultrie, in his Espousals of St. Dorothea, 1870. iii. Wo ist dein Stachel nun, o Tod? Easter. Founded on 1 Cor. xv., 55-58.
