Oswald J. Smith

1889 - 1986 Scripture: John 3:17 Author of "Saved! Saved! Saved!" in Hymns for the Living Church Smith, Oswald Jeffrey. (Odessa, Ontario, November 8, 1889--January 25, 1986, Toronto, Canada). Presbyterian. Attended Manitoba College, Winnipeg, 1909-1910; Toronto Bible College, 1907-1908, 1910-1912; McCormick Theological Seminary, 1912-1915; further study at Knox College, Toronto; several honorary doctorates. Pastorates in Toronto, 1915-1958; frequently conducted evangelistic meetings and crusades elsewhere. In 1928 he organized the virtually autonomous People's Church, which combines a vigorous evangelistic program in Toronto with an enviable overseas missionary network; in 1958 he relinquished its guidance to his son Paul, but remained its highly active minister emeritus. He published some 35 devotional and inspirational books, which he eventually combined into fourteen; most of his 1200 hymns and poems first appeared in church-connected magazines, but many are found in Poems of a Lifetime (London: Marshall, 1962). --Hugh D. Roger M. Hickman

1888 - 1968 Scripture: John 3:17 Composer of "HICKMAN" in Hymns for the Living Church Born: November 28, 1888, southwest Missouri. Died: February 25, 1968, Lakeland, Florida. Buried: Oak Hill Cemetery, Lakeland, Florida. Born in the Ozark foothills, Hickman moved to Independence, Missouri, at age 16, and studied music with instructors in Kansas City. He came to Christ at age 20, and studied at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, where he met his wife. They served in the evangelism field together until her death in 1942. Roger went on to serve as music & Christian education director at churches in Louisiana & Florida. He directed the Music Department at the Baptist Bible Institute in Lakeland, Florida (1949-53), & wrote over 100 Gospel songs. He & Arthur McKee compiled the first volume of Tabernacle Hymns in 1916. --www.hymntime.com/tch

Philip Phillips

1834 - 1895 Person Name: P. P. Scripture: John 3:16 Author of "A Song of Salvation" in Sacred Songs and Solos Phillips, Philip, commonly known as the "Singing Pilgrim," was born in Chautauqua County, N. York, Aug. 13, 1834. Although engaged in farming for a time, from an early age he devoted himself to music, and ultimately devoted himself to the work of a "Singing Evangelist," in which capacity he has visited most English-speaking countries. His popular hymnals are: (1) Early Blossoms, 1860; (2) Musical Leaves, 1862; and (3) The Singing Pilgrim, 1866. In these works he published one or two hymns, including "I have heard of a Saviour's love" (The love of Christ), as in I. D. Robert Walmsley

1831 - 1905 Person Name: Robert Walmsley, 1831-1905 Scripture: John 3:16 Author of "Come, let us sing of a wonderful love" in Singing the Faith Walmsley, Robert, was b. at Manchester March 18, 1831, went to Sale in 1870, where he was till 1904 in business as a jeweller, and d. at Sale Oct. 30, 1905. He was a Congregationalist, and was for 28 years connected with the work of the Manchester Sunday School Union, many of his hymns being written for the annual Whitweek Festival. He published 44 of them, with a preface dated Dec. 1900, as Sacred Songs for Children of all Ages. They are simple, musical, full of a deep love of God, of the works of God in nature, and of little children, and deserve to be more extensively used. The best-known of the longer hymns are:— 1. O praise our God to-day; Ye people haste to pay. [Praise to God.] Dated 1899, and included in his Sacred Songs, &c, 1900, No. 25. 2. Praise the Lord, His works exalt Him. [Praise to God.] Dated 1888. In his Sacral Songs, &c, 1900, No. 31. 3. The sun declines, o'er land and sea. [Evening,] Dated 1893. In his Sacred Songs, Dec., 1900, No. 38. It was given in the Scotch Church Hymnary, 1898. Arguably his best known song is “Each Step I Take." Mercer worked for the John T. Benson company from 1951 to 1981 as a music editor. He also consulted for LifeWay, Lorenz, Brentwood, and other music companies. He and his wife Marcia traveled as singing evangelists for three decades and he served as the music minister for Scottsboro First Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Friedrich Filitz

1804 - 1876 Person Name: Friedrich Filitz, 1804-1876e Scripture: John 3:14 Composer of "CASWALL" in Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New Friedrich Filitz PhD Germany 1804-1876. Born at Arnstadt. Thuringia, he was a German composer and musicologist. He collected church music. He also studied philosophy. In 1833 he worked in Berlin as a music critic and at other employment. He was also a music historian. With Ludwig Erck, he published a collection of 15th & 17th Century chorales in 1845. He moved to Munich and published a chorale book in 1847. His legacy of vauable church music was donated to the Bavarian State Library, where it has made many forgotten works available once again. He died in Bonn, Germany. John Perry
