W. O. Perkins

Born at Stockbridge, VT, older brother of Henry, and the son of musical parents (both singers) he was trained musically, primarly by his father. He attended the Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, NH, then studied music in Boston, MA, London, England, and Milan, Italy. He settled in Boston, MA, and founded a music academy, where he taught music. He published a number of hymnals in Boston, then moved to New York City. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of music degree in 1879 by Hamilton College. He wrote 19 books (1861-1897), including a history of the war in South Africa (1900). He published 33 hymnals 1859-1882). In 1870 he published ”The Chorister”, his 400-page music collection for choirs, schools, and conventions. He was an author, composer, editor, compiler, and originator. He died at Boston, MA. 1859 - 1952 Person Name: William John Sparrow-Simpson, 1859-1952 Meter: 8.7.8.7 with refrain Author of "Holy Jesu, by thy passion" in Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New Simpson, William John Sparrow, M.A., was educated at Trin. College, Camb., B.A. 1882, M.A. 1886. Ordained in 1882, he held various appointments until 1904, when he became Chaplain to St. Mary's Hospital, Great Ilford. He has published several works, including a Memoir of Dr. W. S. Simpson, 1899. He contributed "All for Jesus—all for Jesus" (All for Jesus), and "Jesus, the Crucified, prays for me" (Passiontide), to C. W. A. Brooke's Additional Hymns, 1901). These hymns originally appeared in Sir J. Sarah Poulton Kalley

Married Scottish physician and missionary Robert Reid Kalley. Together they went to Brazil. She wrote many hymns and was instrumental in organizing Salmos e Hinos the first Brazilian evangelical hymnal in the Portuguese language, first used at Igreja Evangélica Fluminense in 1861.

She studied music at St. Katharine's College in Liverpool, UK and at Trinity College, London. She was a violinist, pianist, and teacher. She married Philip Potter, general secretary of the World Council of Churches in Geneva. Through her husband she met Fred Kaan and composed tunes for Kaan's texts, as well as other hymn tunes.
