Esther Bergen

1921 - 2005 Scripture: John 3:14-21 Translator of "For God So Loved Us" in Moravian Book of Worship Esther Bergen was born on June 18, 1921 in Morden, Manitoba, Canada. She was the daughter of a Mennonite minister and graduated from the Mennonite College Institute in Gretna, Manitoba. After teaching in several rural schools, she attended the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg. She taught music at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College, and served as Dean and Registrar at the Canadian Mennonite Bible College. She also worked as a missionary in Mexico with her husband, Menno Bergen (1956-68). She translated some 150 hymns, and composed several hymn tunes. She was a teacher, musician, poet, translator, church worker, wife, and mother. She died in on March 1, 2005 in Winnepeg. [Sources: Hustad, Donald Paul. Albert F. Bayly

1901 - 1984 Person Name: Albert F. Bayly, 1901 - Scripture: John 3:16-17 Author of "Lord, Save Your World" in Hymns of the Saints Albert F. Bayly was born on September 6, 1901, Bexhill on Sea, Sussex, England. He received his education at London University (BA) and Mansfield College, Oxford. Bayly was a Congregationalist (later United Reformed Church) minister from the late 1920s until his death in 1984. His life and ministry spanned the Depression of the 1930s, the Second World War, and the years of reconstruction which followed. After retiring in 1971, he moved to Springfield, Chelmsford, and was active in the local United Reformed Church. He wrote several pageants on mission themes, and librettos for cantatas by W. L. 1839 - 1929 Person Name: Elisha Albright Hoffman, 1839-1929 Scripture: John 3:14-17 Composer of "THAILAND" in Together in Song Elisha Hoffman (1839-1929) after graduating from Union Seminary in Pennsylvania was ordained in 1868. As a minister he was appointed to the circuit in Napoleon, Ohio in 1872. He worked with the Evangelical Association's publishing arm in Cleveland for eleven years. He served in many chapels and churches in Cleveland and in Grafton in the 1880s, among them Bethel Home for Sailors and Seamen, Chestnut Ridge Union Chapel, Grace Congregational Church and Rockport Congregational Church. In his lifetime he wrote more than 2,000 gospel songs including"Leaning on the everlasting arms" (1894). The fifty song books he edited include Pentecostal Hymns No. 1 and The Evergreen, 1873. Died: March 12, 2014, at her home in Wilton, Connecticut. Iola spent her formative years in northern California, where her father worked in various locations as a forest ranger. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class in Shasta, California, she enrolled at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where she earned earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1941, in the school’s concert hall, she met her future husband, jazz musician Dave Brubeck, whose career she helped manage, and for whom she wrote lyrics for many of his scores.
