W. E. M. Hackleman

1868 - 1927 Composer of "[When I survey the wondrous cross]" in Bethany Hymns William Edward Michael Hackleman USA 1868-1927. Born at Orange, IN, he grew up on a farm. At age 17 he was teaching singing classes and leading singing in meetings. He later taught public school for four years and studied music in Toronto, Canada, at the Conservatory of Music, under Italian composer, Francesco d'Auria, and also with other private teachers in New York City. He married Pearl C MNU, and they had four children: Edwin, Florence, Grace, and Gladys. He edited songbooks, composed music and lead music at state and national conventions of the Christian Church. He was an evangelist and served as president of the National Association of Church Musicians, and for five years was secretary to the Indiana Missionary Society. He led singing at the Centennial Convention in 1909 at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, PA, for an estimated crowd of 30,000. He also ran the Hackleman Music Company in Indianapolis, IN. He published 15 religious songbooks, some lyrics and many tunes. He died in an auto accident in St. Elmo, IL, enroute to a church convention. John Perry

Samuel Webbe

1770 - 1843 Harmonizer of "COMMUNION (ROCKINGHAM)" in Voices United Samuel Webbe, Jr. (1770-1843), adapted the tune RICHMOND. He was organist at Paradise Street Unitarian Church, Liverpool (1798). John J. Overholt

1918 - 2000 Person Name: Compiler Arranger (harmony) of "ROCKINGHAM OLD" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 John J. Overholt was born to an Amish family of limited means in the state of Ohio in 1918. As a child he was soon introduced to his father's personal collection of gospel songs and hymns, which was to have a marked influence on his later life. With his twin brother Joe, he early was exposed to the Amish-Mennonite tradition hymn-singing and praising worship. An early career in Christian service led to a two-year period of relief work in the country of Poland following World War II. During that interim he began to gather many European songs and hymns as a personal hobby, not realizing that these selections would become invaluable to The Christian Hymnary which was begun in 1960 and completed twelve years later in 1972, with a compilation of 1000 songs, hymns and chorales. (The largest Menn. hymnal). A second hymnal was begun simultaneously in the German language entitled Erweckungs Lieder Nr.1 which was brought to completion in 1986. This hymnal has a total of 200 selections with a small addendum of English hymns. Mr. Overholt married in 1965 to an accomplished soprano Vera Marie Sommers, who was not to be outdone by her husband's creativity and compiled a hymnal of 156 selections entitled Be Glad and Sing, directed to children and youth and first printed in 1986. During this later career of hymn publishing, Mr. Overholt also found time for Gospel team work throughout Europe. At this writing he is preparing for a 5th consecutive tour which he arranges and guides. The countries visited will be Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, USSR and Romania. Mr. Overholt was called to the Christian ministry in 1957 and resides at Sarasota, Florida where he is co-minister of a Beachy Amish-Mennonite Church. Timothy B. Mason

1801 - 1861 Person Name: T. B. Mason Composer of "EDEN" in The Presbyterian Book of Praise Timothy Batelle Mason USA 1801-1861. Born at Medfield, MA, a younger brother of Lowell Mason, he became an author and wrote or co-authored several works, including: “The sacred harp” (1836), “The liberty minstrel” (1845), “The shawm: a library of church music” (1853), “A journey through Kansas” (1855). He founded the Eclectic Academy of Cincinnati, OH. In 1821 he married Alma Harding, and they had six children: Alma, Lucretia, Addison, Henry, Mary, and Abbie. His wife, Alma, died in 1836. In 1837 he married Abigail (Abby) K Hall, and they had three children: Edward, Helen, and William. He was an author, arranger, editor, and compiler of anthems, hymns, tune books, scores, Psalms, motets, and shape-note hymnals. He died from cancer at Cincinnati, OH. John Perry
