Great God, What Do I See and Hear!

Author: Anon.; William B. Collyer; Thomas Cotterill Hymnal: Trinity Psalter Hymnal #389 (2018) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Great God, what do I see and hear! The end of things created! The Judge of mankind doth appear on clouds of glory seated! The trumpet sounds; the graves restore the dead which they contained before: prepare, my soul, to meet him. 2 The dead in Christ shall first arise, at the last trumpet's sounding, caught up to meet him in the skies, with joy their Lord surrounding; no gloomy fears their souls dismay; his presence sheds eternal day on those prepared to meet him. 3 But sinners, filled with guilty fears, behold his wrath prevailing; for they shall rise, and find their tears and sighs are unavailing: the day of grace is past and gone; trembling, they stand before the throne, all unprepared to meet him. 4 Great God, what do I see and hear! The end of things created! The Judge of mankind doth appear on clouds of glory seated! Beneath his cross I view the day when heav'n and earth shall pass away, and thus prepare to meet him. Salvation unto Us Has Come

Author: Paul Speratus, 1484-1551 Hymnal: Christian Worship (1993) #390 (1993) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor. Good works cannot avert our doom; They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is the one Redeemer. 2 What God does in his law demand And none to him can render Brings wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It is a false, misleading dream That God his law has given That sinners can themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 Yet as the law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He has for us the law obeyed And thus the Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 5 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Your grace alone, dear Lord, I plead; Your death is now my life indeed, For you have paid my ransom. 6 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by his grace-- All glory to his merit! O Triune God in heav'n above, You have revealed your saving love; Your blessed name be hallowed! Topics: Justification; Justification Languages: English Tune Title: ES IST DAS HEIL

The Soldiers Led The Savior Out

Author: C. V. Pilcher; Hallgrim Petursson, 1614-1674 Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #391 (1930) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 The soldiers led the Savior out, Their band together calling Into the hall with cruel shout; In blasphemy appalling, They stripped Him of His clothes and spread A purple robe about Him--red Beneath it blood was falling. 2 Of thorns they platted swift a crown, That pierced Him uncomplaining; Hard on His head they crushed it down, Until the blood drops raining Gushed forth, His sacred eyes and face, Which ever looked upon our race In love, with crimson staining. 3 As scepter in His hand, a reed They placed with hate unfeeling; They hailed Him King and mocked His need, In scorn before Him kneeling: And as they spat and smote Him sore, Their laughter, louder than before, Thro' all the hall went pealing. 4 By Thy abasement, Lord, I gain My royal exaltation; Eternal honor I attain Thro' Thy humiliation; Amid the ransomed hosts I take, For my adored Redeemer's sake, With joy my blood-bought station. 5 And so, while life shall last, Thy grace I would be ever praising, To Thy dear name in ev'ry place My thankful song upraising; In ev'rything Thy blessed will I would with ready heart fulfill And tell Thy love amazing. If Your Beloved Son, O God

Author: Johann Heermann, 1585-1647 Hymnal: Christian Worship (1993) #393 (1993) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 If your beloved Son, O God, Had not to earth descended And in our mortal flesh and blood Had not sin's power ended, Then this poor, wretched soul of mine In hell eternally would pine Because of my transgression. 2 But now I find sweet peace and rest; Despair no more reigns o'er me. No more am I by sin oppressed, For Christ has borne sin for me. Upon the cross for me he died That, reconciled, I might abide With you, my God, forever. 3 I trust in him with all my heart; Now all my sorrow ceases. His words abiding peace impart; His blood from guilt releases. Free grace through him I now obtain; He washes me from ev'ry stain, And pure I stand before him. 4 All righteousness by works is vain; The law brings condemnation. True righteousness by faith I gain; Christ's work is my salvation. His death, that perfect sacrifice, Has paid the all-sufficient price; In him my hope is anchored. 5 My guilt, O Father, you have laid On Christ, your Son, my Savior. Lord Jesus, you my debt have paid And gained for me God's favor. O Holy Spirit, Fount of grace, The good in me to you I trace; In faith and hope preserve me. O Precious Saviour, Heal and Bless

Author: Anna Hoppe Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #393 (1926) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 O precious Saviour, heal and bless The suff'rers in affliction. Thou knowest, Lord, their helplessness; Look down in benediction Upon the sick who seek Thine aid, Let them in faith, all unafraid, Rest in Thy tender mercy. 2 "Remember them that are in bonds," Thy Word so gently pleadeth, Thy mercy to our prayers responds, Thy kindness intercedeth. Fill us with love, Thou Love divine, Toward all who in affliction pine, Let us reflect Thy patience. 3 O dearest Lord, remember those In bonds of dread diseases; Incarnate God, Thy wisdom knows The balsam that releases. Thou Sufferer of Calvary, Let these afflicted hide in Thee, And in Thy wounds find healing. Amen.
