b. 1927 Composer of "[Praise God from whom all blessings flow]" in The New Century Hymnal Ronald A. Nelson With degrees from St. Olaf College and the University of Wisconsin Madison, Ronald A. Nelson served for 37 years as Director of Music at Westwood Lutheran Church in suburban Minneapolis, where he has been named Cantor Emeritus and now serves as choir member. Since his retirement he devotes his time to composing, guest conducting, and serving as organist for Chapel Services at Becketwood, the Senior Cooperative where he and his wife Betty Lou reside. In 1999, he was one of 50 composers chosen to write music for the "Continental Harmony" project of the American Composers Forum and National Endowment for the Arts to celebrate the new millennium. That composition, "Building Bridges," received Honorable Mention in the Waging Peace Through Singing competition of the University of Oregon. For a 2001 Composers Forum "Faith Partners" Commission he wrote music for three Wisconsin parishes of different denominations, and is now doing a second "Faith Partners" for two parishes in Hutchinson, Minnesota. He is the recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Olaf College, the F. Melius Christiansen Award from Minnesota ACDA, and the Faithful Servant Award from the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, which last year made available a CD of his compositions. Richard D. Wetzel

b. 1935 Composer of "[Praise God, from whom all blessings flow]" in The Worshipbook Richard D. Wetzel (b. 1935) received the Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Pittsburgh, studying under D�nes Bartha, Theodore Finney, and Robert Snow. He joined the faculty of Ohio University in 1970. Dr. Wetzel's area of emphasis is American Music, and he is published in The New Grove Dictionary of American Music and American National Biography. His book, Frontier Musicians, is a definitive work on German-American music of the 18th and 19th centuries. Wetzel is also a composer and hymnologist, and his liturgical music is found in numerous denominational hymnals, including those published by the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches and the United Church of Christ. Professor Wetzel was the recipient of Ohio University's Outstanding University Professor Award and is currently Chair of Graduate Studies in the School of Music. Abner Kneeland

1774 - 1844 Person Name: Kneeland Author of "Praise God, from whom all blessings flow" in Hymns Kneeland, Abner, born in 1774, was noted for his religious changes, most of which may be traced through his hymns. He contributed 147 pieces to the American Universalist's Hymns composed by different Authors, 1808; and also edited The Philadelphia Hymn Book, 1819, and Hymns for the Use of those who are Slaves to no Sect, in 1834. In 1836 he underwent a trial at Boston for blasphemy. He died in 1844. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (190 ============================== Kneeland, Rev. Abner. (Iowa, 1774--1844, Salubria, Iowa). A Universalist miniter, one of the editors of the collection Hymns composed by different Authors, by order of the General Convention of Universalists of the New England States, 1808, to which he contributed 138 hymns, of poor quality. He resigned from the Universalist ministry in 1829 and became lecturer to a society of Freethinkers in Boston, and began publication of a periodical called the Investigator. In 1833 he was indicted on a charge of blasphemy and served a prison sentence. On his release he returned to Iowa, then a territory, and established a free-thinking colony which he called Salubria. His hymn beginning "Mediator, Son of God" is included in Church Harmonies: New and Old, 1895. --Henry Wilder Foote, DNAH Archives
