Albert F. Bayly

1901 - 1984 Person Name: Albert Frederick Bayly, 1801-84 Scripture: Luke 6:32-36 Author of "What does the Lord require" in Together in Song Albert F. Bayly was born on September 6, 1901, Bexhill on Sea, Sussex, England. He received his education at London University (BA) and Mansfield College, Oxford. Bayly was a Congregationalist (later United Reformed Church) minister from the late 1920s until his death in 1984. His life and ministry spanned the Depression of the 1930s, the Second World War, and the years of reconstruction which followed. After retiring in 1971, he moved to Springfield, Chelmsford, and was active in the local United Reformed Church. He wrote several pageants on mission themes, and librettos for cantatas by W. L. Miguel Manzano

b. 1934 Scripture: Luke 6:27-38 Author of "When the poor ones" in The Book of Praise Miguel Manzano is a Spanish composer and singer. He was born in Aillamor de Cardozo near the border with Portugal. Miguel began his religious musical career at the age of 8 as cantor at the Cathedral of Zamora, Spain. He studied solfeg, piano, organ and harmonium with the renowned teacher, Gaspar Arabaolaza. Later on, he began studies at the Higher School of Sacred Music in Madrid, where he studied Rhythm and Gregorian Modality, as well as Harmony and Religious Polyphony. He furthered his studies of language and musical rhythm at the Catholic Institute of Paris. Miguel's internationally recognized music has been chosen to complete the repertoire of the National Liturgical Hymnal of the Espicopal Committee of Spanish Liturgy. Jose Antonio Olivar

1939 - 2019 Person Name: J. A. The son of a seafaring family, Olivier went through difficult times during his childhood. He lost his parents and four brothers and faced the harsh post-war period as an orphan. Richard Runciman Terry

1865 - 1938 Person Name: Richard Runciman Terry 1865-1938 Scripture: Luke 6:32-36 Composer of "HIGHWOOD" in Together in Song Terry, Richard R., was born at Morpeth, Jan. 3, 1868, and was Tate Choral Scholar at King's College, Cambridge. In 1896 he became organist and music-master at Downside R. C. College and Abbey, Bath; and in 1901 organist and director of the choir at Westminster Cathedral (R. C.) London. He contributed to A. E. Tozer's Catholic Hymns, 1898, thirteen tunes and the words of two hymns:— 1. Christ, the Lord, is my true Shepherd. Ps. xxiii. 2. Peaceful eve, so still and holy. Christmas Carol. It is marked as D. C. B., i.e. for Downside Coll., Bath. Hubert P. Main

1839 - 1925 Scripture: Luke 6:31 Composer of "[Never lose the golden rule]" in The Bright Array Hubert Platt Main DD USA 1839-1925. Born at Ridgefield, CT, he attended singing school as a teenager. In 1854 he went to New York City and worked as an errand boy in a wallpaper house. The next year he became an errand boy in the Bristow & Morse Piano Company. He was an organist, choir leader, and compiled books of music. He also helped his father edit the “Lute Songbook” by Isaac Woodbury. In 1866 he married Olphelia Louise Degraff, and they had two sons: Lucius, and Hubert. In 1867 he filled a position at William B Bradbury’s publishing house. After Bradbury’s death in 1868 the Bigelow & Main Publishers were formed as its successor. He also worked with his father until his father’s death in 1873. Contributors to their efforts were Fanny Crosby, Ira Sankey, Wilbur Crafts, and others. In addition to publishing, Main wrote 1000+ pieces of music, including part song, singing school songs, Sunday school music, hymns, anthems, etc. He also arranged music and collected music books. He 1891 he sold his collection of over 3500 volumes to the Newberry Library in Chicago, IL, where they were known as the Main Library. Some of his major publications include: “Book of Praise for the Sunday school” (1875), “Little pilgrim songs” (1884), “Hymns of Praise” (`1884), “Gems of song for the Sunday school” (1901), “Quartettes for men’s voices: Sacred & social selections” (1913). In 1922 Hope Publishing Company acquired Bigelow & Main. He was an editor, author, compiler, and composer, as well as publisher. He died in Newark, NJ. John Perry
