There is a green hill far away

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander, 1818-95 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 706 hymnals Scripture: John 3:14-17 Lyrics: 1 There is a green hill far away, outside a city wall, where the dear Lord was crucified, who died to save us all. 2 We may not know, we cannot tell, what pains he had to bear, but we believe it was for us he hung and suffered there. 3 He died that we might be forgiven, he died to make us good, that we might go at last to heaven, saved by his precious blood. 4 There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin, he only could unlock the gate of heaven, and let us in. 5 O dearly, dearly has he loved, and we must love him too, and trust in his redeeming blood, and try his works to do. Lord, teach us how to pray aright

Author: James Montgomery (1771-1854) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 225 hymnals Scripture: John 3:14-15 Lyrics: 1 Lord, teach us how to pray aright with reverence and with fear; though fallen sinners in thy sight, we may, we must, draw near. 2 Our spirits fail through lack of prayer: oh, grant us power to pray; and, when to meet thee we prepare, Lord, meet us by the way. 3 God of all grace, we bring to thee a broken contrite heart; give what thine eye delights to see-- truth in the inward part; 4 Trust in the only sacrifice that can for sin atone, to cast our hopes, to fix our eyes, on Christ, on Christ alone; 5 Patience to watch and wait and weep, though mercy long delay; and courage our faint souls to keep, with faith in thee alway. 6 Give these, and then thy will be done: thus, strengthened with all might, we, through thy Spirit and thy Son, shall pray and pray aright. Gift of God

Author: Beddome Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 55 hymnals Scripture: John 3:16 First Line: Jesus my love, my chief delight Lyrics: 1 Jesus my love, my chief delight, For thee I long, for thee I pray; Amid the shadows of the night, Amid the business of the day. 2 When shall I see thy smiling face, That face which often I have seen; Arise, thou sun of righteousness, Scatter the clouds that intervene. 3 Thou art the glorious gift of God, To sinners weary, and distrest: The first of all his gifts bestow'd, And certain pledge of all the rest. 4 Could I but say, this gift is mine, I'd tread the world beneath my feet; No more at poverty repine, Nor envy the rich sinner's state. 5 The precious jewel I would keep, And lodge it deep within my heart; At home, abroad, awake asleep, It never should from thence depart!
