David McK. Williams

1887 - 1978 Meter: 6.6.6.6 D Composer of "NON NOBIS DOMINE" in The Hymnal of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America 1940 David McKinley Williams (Conductor) Born: February 20, 1887 - Carnarvonshire, Wales, UK Died: March 13, 1978 - Oakland, California, USA The Welsh-born American church musician, composer, and teacher, David McKinley Williams, began his career in church music as a chorister in the choir of the Cathedral of St. John, Denver. At the age of 13 he became the organist of St. Peter's Church, Denver. In 1908 David McKinley Williams went to New York to serve as the organist of Grace Church Chapel. He moved to Paris in 1911 for study with some of the best known French organists of the time. Upon his return, he served as organist of the Church of the Holy Communion in New York. He served in the Royal Canadian Artillery in World War I and returned to his New York position in 1920. After only six months, he was appointed organist and choirmaster of St. Bartholomew's Church, New York. He held this position until his retirement in 1947. David McKinley Williams developed one of the most outstanding music programs in the USA at St. Bartholomew's. He was head of the organ department of the Juilliard School of Music and a member of the faculty of the School of Sacred Music, Union Theological Seminary. He also served as a member of the Joint Commission on Church Music and the Joint Commission on the Revision of the Hymnal that produced The Hymnal (1940). The Hymnal 1982 uses five of his tunes, including MALABAR used with "Strengthen for Service" (Hymn 312), CANTICUM REFECTIONIS, used with "This is the hour of banquet and of song" (Hymn 316), and GEORGETOWN, used with "They cast their nets in Galilee" (Hymn 661). 1853 - 1931 Person Name: Thomas A. Lacey Meter: 6.6.6.6 D Translator (from Latin) of "Lord of Creation, Bow Thine Ear" in The Cyber Hymnal Lacey, Thomas Alexander, s. of G. F. Lacey, was b. at Nottingham, Dec. 20, 1853. He entered Balliol Coll., Oxford, as an exhibitioner in 1871 (B.A. 1876, M.A. 1885), was ordained D. 1876, P. 1879, was from 1894 to 1903 Vicar of Madingley near Cambridge, and since then has been Chaplain of the London Diocesan Penitentiary. He was one of the Committee who compiled The English Hymnal, 1906, and contributed to it twelve translations (8, 66, 67, 69, 104, 123, 124, 174, 208, 226, 249, 325), also one unpublished and one previously published original, viz., 1. O Faith of England, taught of old. [Church Defence.] 2. The dying robber raised his aching brow. [Good Friday.] First in the Treasury, Sept. 1905, p. 482, headed "Sursum." John M. Wigner

1844 - 1911 Meter: 6.6.6.6 D Author of "Come to the Savior Now" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Wigner, John Murch, second son of J. T. Wigner, was born at Lynn, June 19, 1844. He was educated at the Grammar School of Lynn, and afterwards graduated B.A. and B.SC. in the London University. Mr. J. M. Wigner now resides near London, and has been for many years in the India Home Civil Service. He is connected with his father's church, and has done much to promote the spiritual welfare of the young. He is the author of several hymns, three of which are in the Baptist Psalms and Hymns for School and Home, 1882;— 1. "Come to the Saviour now!" Invitation. 2. "Lost one! wandering on in sadness." Return to God. 3. "Lo, a loving Friend is waiting." The Call of Jesus. The first of these is in the Baptist Psalms & Hymns, 1880, and is dated 1871. [Rev. W.R.
