J. W. Randolph
b. 1842 Person Name: J. W. R. Composer of "MANTEO" in The Everlasting Joy James Weldon Randolph was born October 15, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa. He attended Northern Liberty and James Bird's Schools. He has given special study to the subjects of music, French, German and Spanish, and received the D.D. degree from Paul Quinncollege. He was converted in 1863 and joined the A. M.E. Chruch the same year. He was licensed to preach and was ordained deacon in 1870 and elder in 1871 at Columbus, Ga. He has held appointments in George, Arkansas, Texas, California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

Chandler Robbins
1810 - 1882 Person Name: C. Robbins Author of "While now thy throne of grace we seek" in The Brethren Hymnal Robbins, Chandler, D.D., was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, Feb. 14, 1810, and educated at Harvard College (1829), and the Cambridge Divinity School (1833). In 1833 he became Pastor of the Second [Unitarian] Church, Boston, succeeding Dr. H. Ware, jun., and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He received his D.D. degree from Harvard in 1855, and died at Westport, Massachusetts, Sept. 12, 1882. Dr. Robbins published several prose works. He also edited The Social Hymn Book in 1843, and Hymns for Christian Worship, 1854. His two hymns,"Lo, the day of rest declineth" (Evening), and "While thus [now] Thy throne of grace we seek " (The Voice of God), appeared in Dr. G. E. Ellis's Psalms & Hymns for the Sanctuary, 1845. L. B. Barnes's tune, "Bedford Street," was written for the former.
