Dear Father, Lord of humankind

Author: John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-92 Meter: 8.6.8.8.6 Appears in 522 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 19:11-21 Lyrics: 1 Dear Father, Lord of humankind, forgive our foolish ways; reclothe us in our rightful mind: in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise, in deeper reverence, praise. 2 In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word rise up and follow thee, rise up and follow thee. 3 O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love, interpreted by love! 4 Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace. 5 Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm. Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Meter: 8.6.8.8.6 with repeat Appears in 10 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 19 Lyrics: 1 He comes to us as one unknown, A breath unseen, unheard; As though within a heart of stone, Or shriveled seed in darkness sown, A pulse of being stirred. A pulse of being stirred. 2 He comes when souls in silence lie And thoughts of day depart; Half-seen upon the inward eye, A falling star across the sky Of night within the heart. Of night within the heart. 3 He comes to us in sound of seas, The ocean's fume and foam; Yet small and still upon the breeze, A wind that stirs the tops of trees, A voice to call us home. A voice to call us home. 4 He comes in love as once he came By flesh and blood and birth; To bear within our mortal frame A life, a death, a saving Name For ev'ry child of earth. For ev'ry child of earth. 5 He comes in truth when faith is grown; Believed, obeyed, adored: The Christ in all the scriptures shown, As yet unseen, but not unknown, Our Savior and our Lord. All Hail the True Elijah

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Meter: 7.7.8.7 D Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 19:19 Lyrics: 1 All hail the True Elijah, the Lord our God and Savior! Who leaves behind, for all mankind the token of His favor. The never dying Prophet, a while to mortals given, this solemn day is rapt away by flaming steed to heaven. 2 Come see the rising triumph and prostrate fall before Him; He mounts the skies, above them flies, where all His hosts adore Him. Borne on His fiery chariot with joyful acclamation, pursue the Lord to heav'n restored, the God of our salvation. 3 Who see their Lord at parting, they shall on earth inherit a double pow'r, a larger show'r of His descending Spirit. The Spirit of our Master shall rest on each believer, and surely, we our Master see, who lives and reigns forever. 4 Yes, our exalted Jesus, by faith we now adore Thee, and still we sit before Thy feet, and triumph in Thy glory. In vain the flaming chariot has parted us asunder, we still through grace behold Thy face, and shout our loving wonder. 6 By faith we catch Thy mantle, the cov'ring of Thy Spirit; by faith we wear and gladly share Thine all-involving merit. We rest beneath Thy shadow till by the whirlwind driven, from earth we rise and mount the skies, and grasp our Lord in heaven! Topics: Jesus, Ascended and Seated Ascension Used With Tune: WEBB

We sing your praise, eternal God

Author: Alan Gaunt (b. 1935) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: 1 Kings 19 Lyrics: 1 We sing your praise, eternal God, to whom all praise belongs; but we can never match your love, however loud our songs: 2 Your love which comes so silently, through all the noise we hear; the noise of quarrelling and war, the cries of grief and fear. 3 The winds of doubt uproot our faith, the earthquakes of despair destroy our hope, and fires of hate kill love and stifle prayer. 4 And yet no sound on earth can drown the silence we have heard; the voice of your eternal love; the silence of your Word. 5 It comes to guilty, broken hearts, with challenge and release; prepares us for self-sacrifice and speaks eternal peace. Topics: Doubt; Fear; God Love of; Justice and Peace; Peace Used With Tune: THIS ENDRIS NYGHT
