Deliverance from Slander and Reproach

Appears in 38 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 31:7-38 First Line: My heart rejoices in thy name Lyrics: 1 My heart rejoices in thy name, My God, my heav'nly trust; Thou hast preserv'd me free from shame, Mine honour from the dust. 2 "My life is spent with grief," I cry'd, "My years consum'd in groans, "My strength decays, mine eyes are dry'd, "And sorrow wastes my bones." 3 Among mine enemies my name A proverb vain was grown, While to my neighbors I become Forgotten and unknown. 4 Slander and fear on ev'ry side Seiz'd and beset me round, I to the throne of grace apply'd, And speedy rescue found. Pause. 5 How great deliv'rance thou hast wrought Before the sons of men! The lying lips to silence brought, And made their boasting vain! 6 Thy children from the strife of tongues Shall thy pavilion hide, Guard them from infamy and wrongs, And crush the sons of pride. 7 Within thy sacred presence, Lord, Let me for ever dwell; No fenced city wall'd and barr'd, Secures a saint so well.

Father, I know that all my life

Author: A. L. Waring Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.6 Appears in 233 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 31:15 Lyrics: Father, I know that all my life Is portioned out for me, And the changes that are sure to come, I do not fear to see; But I ask Thee for a present mind Intent on pleasing Thee. I ask Thee for a thoughtful love, Through constant watching wise, To meet the glad with joyful smiles, And to wipe the weeping eyes; And a heart at leisure from itself, To soothe and sympathize. I would not have the restless will That hurries to and fro, Seeking for some great thing to do, Or secret thing to know; I would be treated as a child, And guided where I go. Wherever in the world I am, In whatsoe'er estate, I have a fellowship with hearts To keep and cultivate; And a work of lowly love to do For the Lord on whom I wait. So I ask Thee for the daily strength, To none that ask denied, And a mind to blend with outward life While keeping at Thy side; Content to fill a little space, If Thou be glorified. And if some things I do not ask, In my cup of blessing be, I would have my spirit filled the more With grateful love to Thee — More careful — not to serve Thee much, But to please Thee perfectly. There are briers besetting every path, That call for patient care; There is a cross in every lot, And an earnest need for prayer; But a lowly heart that leans on Thee Is happy anywhere. In a service which Thy will appoints, There are no bonds for me; For my inmost heart is taught “the truth” That makes Thy children “free;” And a life of self–renouncing love, Is a life of liberty.

The Saints happy in being entirely at the Disposal of his God—My Times are in thy Hand

Author: Ryland, junior Appears in 164 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 31:15 First Line: Sovereign ruler of the skies Lyrics: 1 Sovereign ruler of the skies, Ever gracious ever wise! All my times are in thy hand, All events at thy command. 2 His decree, that form'd the earth, Fix'd my first and second birth; Parents, native-place, and time, All appointed were by him. 3 He that form'd me in the womb, He shall guide me to the tomb: All my times shall ever be Order'd by his wise decree. 4 Times of sickness, times of health; Times of penury and wealth: Times of trial and of grief; Times of triumph and relief. 5 Times the tempter's power to prove; Times to taste a Savior's love: All must come and last and end, As shall please my heavenly friend. 6 Plagues and deaths around me fly; Till he bids, I cannot die: Not a single shaft can hit, Till the God of love sees fit. 7 O thou gracious, wise and just, In thy hands my life I trust; Have I somewhat dearer still? I resign it to thy will. 8 May I always own thy hand— Still to thee surrender stand: Know that thou art God alone, I and mine are all thy own. 9 Thee at all times will I bless; Having thee, I all possess: How can I bereaved be, Since I cannot part with thee.
