John Dykes Bower was born on 13 August 1905 in Gloucester. He was one of four brothers. Stephen Dykes Bower became a famous church architect. He was educated at Cheltenham College and studied organ under Herbert Brewer, and was organ scholar at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge from 1922.
