A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth

Author: P. Gerhardt Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 20 hymnals Lyrics: 1 A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth, The guilt of all men bearing; Laden with all the sins of earth, None else the burden sharing! Goes patient on, grows weak and faint, To slaughter led without complaint, That spotless life to offer; Bears shame, and stripes, and wounds and death, Anguish and mockery, and saith, "Willing all this I suffer." 2 That Lamb is Lord of death and life, God over all forever; The Father's Son, whom to that strife Love doth for us deliver! O mighty Love! what hast Thou done! The Father offers up His Son-- The Son content descendeth! O Love, O Love! how strong art Thou! In shroud and grave Thou lay'st Him low Whose word the mountains rendeth! 3 Him on the cross, O Love, Thou lay'st, Fast to that torture nailing, Him as a spotless Lamb Thou slay'st; His heart and flesh are failing-- The body with that crimson flood, That precious tide of noble blood, The heart with anguish breaking! O Lamb! what shall I render Thee For all Thy tender love to me, Or what return be making? 4 My lifelong days would I still Thee Be steadfastly beholding; Thee ever, as Thou ever me, With loving arms enfolding. And when my heart grows faint and chill, My heart's undying light, O still Abide unchanged before me! Myself Thy heritage I sign, Ransomed to be forever Thine, My only hope and glory. 5 I of Thy majesty and grace Would night and day be singing; A sacrifice of joy and praise Myself to Thee still bringing. My steam of life shall flow to Thee Its steadfast current ceaselessly In praise to Thee outpouring; And all the good Thou dost to me I'll treasure in my memory, Deep in my heart's depths storing! 6 Shrine of my heart, give larger space For wealth that passeth measure! Thou must become a royal place For all-excelling treasure. Away, world, with thy golden hoard, And all the glories in thee stored, My treasure is in heaven: For I have found true riches now; My treasure, Christ, my Lord art Thou Thy blood so freely given! 7 This treasure ever I employ, This ever aid shall yield me; In sorrow it shall be my joy, In conflict it shall shield me. In joy, the music of my feast; And when all else has lost its zest, This manna still shall feed me; In thirst my drink, in want my food, Mu company in solitude, To comfort and to lead me! 8 And when I enter on Thy joys With Thee Thy kingdom sharing, Thyself my robe of triumph, Lord, Thy blood my right declaring, Shall place upon my head the crown, Shall lead me to the Father's throne, And raiment fit provide me; Till I, by Him to Thee betrothed, By Thee in bridal costume clothed, Stand as a bride beside Thee! A Lamb Goes Forth Our Griefs To Share

Author: H. Brueckner; Paul Gerhardt Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 A Lamb goes forth our griefs to share, In spirit meek and lowly; He deigns our sin and guilt to bear, This Lamb of God most holy. He goes His way, grows weak and faint, To death is led without complaint, His precious life to offer. He gladly suffers pain and death, And tells us with His dying breath: For you all this I proffer. 2 This gentle Lamb, our dearest Friend, Before the world's foundation Was chosen all our woes to end, To merit our salvation. Said God: My Son, the Savior be Of those who are condemned by Me Because of their transgression. Great is My wrath and sore their loss; Go, die for them upon the cross, Make heaven their possession. 3 The Son replied: O Father mine, To suffer I am willing; My will is in accord with Thine, All righteousness fulfilling.-- O wondrous Love, what hast Thou done! God offers up His only Son, And He to earth descendeth. Here, Love, Thy strength is manifest: He suffers death at Thy behest Whose word the mountains rendeth. 4 Suspended on the tree of shame, He suffers mortal anguish; For all our sins He takes the blame, In grief His soul must languish. His sighs are proof of mortal pain, And opened up is ev'ry vein, His blood in mercy flowing. O gentle Lamb, what shall it be That I in turn may offer Thee, My grateful spirit showing? 5 As long as I my breath retain, Thy tender love beholding, I faithful shall to Thee remain And rest in Thine enfolding. Thy love within my heart shall shine, And I shall prize that light divine Till death mine eyelids closeth; Thou shalt my very being own, And I shall live to Thee alone; My all in Thee reposeth. 6 When I at last Thy kingdom see, With all its boundless treasure, Thy blood my purple robe shall be, My source of joy and pleasure. It shall become my royal crown When I before God's throne kneel down, In deepest homage bending. Then He will place me at Thy side, Bedecked and jeweled as a bride, With angel hosts attending. In This Our Happy Christmastide

Author: H. A. Brorson, 1694-1764 ; C. Døving, 1867-1937 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 3 hymnals Lyrics: 1 In this our happy Christmastide The joyful bells are ringing; To praise be all our pow'rs applied, God's grace and mercy singing; In Him by whom the world was made, Now in the lowly manger laid, Rejoice we in the spirit; Thy praise, O Savior, we will sound Unto the earth's remotest bound, That all the world shall hear it. 2 A little Son, the Virgin-born, True God from everlasting To rescue us who were forlorn, His lot with us is casting; It moved His tender heart to see This world of sin and misery In condemnation lying; Therefore He came from realms above Down to our earth, drawn by His love, To sooth our grief and sighing. 3 Our thanks we offer Him today, Although a poor oblation, Alleluia! our joyful lay, Shall sound through ev'ry nation; Now in our camp the Ark we see, Therefore we shout the victory With joyful hearts unfearing; We sing of peace, the peace profound, That hell shall tremble at the sound, Our Christmas anthem hearing. 4 That God has laid His anger by, He by His gift hath shown us; He gives His Son for us to die, In Him He now doth own us; These joyful tidings tell abroad, That Jesus Christ, the Son of God, From sin doth us deliver; Who then should not be glad today When Christ is born, the sinners' stay, Who is of grace the giver? 5 As darkest night must fade and die Before the sun's appearing, So fades my grief away, when I Think on these tidings cheering, That God from all eternity Hath loved the world, and hath on me Bestowed His grace and favor; I'll ne'er forget the angels' strain: Peace--peace on earth, good will to men, To you is born a Savior! 6 Although my joyful Christmas lay Is mingled with my sighing, The cross shall never take away My joy and praise undying; For when the heart is most opprest, The harp of joy is tuned the best, The better strains are ringing, The cross itself, at Jesus' will, Must aid my soul, that I may still In grief His praise be singing. 7 Alleluia! our strife is o'er, Who, then, should pine in sadness? Who now should grieve in anguish sore In these our days of gladness? Thou Church of God, O sing this morn: To us is Christ the Savior born, O joy that none can sever! Alleluia! sing thou my heart, Now Christ is mine, I can depart To be with Him forever. Topics: Presentation of Christ; Christmas 1 Used With Tune: DER TAG, DER IST SO FREUDENREICH
