Person Name: Anon. Author (v. 1-3) of "The Life Boat" in Soul Inspiring Songs In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

1839 - 1929 Person Name: Rev. Elisha A. Hoffman Author of "We Sail Across the Sea of Life" in Best Hymns No. 3 Elisha Hoffman (1839-1929) after graduating from Union Seminary in Pennsylvania was ordained in 1868. As a minister he was appointed to the circuit in Napoleon, Ohio in 1872. He worked with the Evangelical Association's publishing arm in Cleveland for eleven years. He served in many chapels and churches in Cleveland and in Grafton in the 1880s, among them Bethel Home for Sailors and Seamen, Chestnut Ridge Union Chapel, Grace Congregational Church and Rockport Congregational Church. In his lifetime he wrote more than 2,000 gospel songs including"Leaning on the everlasting arms" (1894). The fifty song books he edited include Pentecostal Hymns No. 1 and The Evergreen, 1873. 1859 - 1931 Person Name: F. M. G. Author (V. 4) of "The Life Boat" in Soul Inspiring Songs Born: March 1, 1859, Birmingham, Illinois. Died: August 25, 1931, Greensboro, Georgia. Buried: Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Greensboro, Georgia. Graham was an ordained minister in the Wesleyan (Methodist) Church and served as District Superintendent in northern Georgia from around 1895 to about 1915. Ira’s father was song writer Elisha Hoffman. His middle name was his mother’s maiden name. At age nine, he is said to have written the music for his father’s song "The Little Pilgrim;" as an adult, he was a composer, arranger, and music editor.
