William Gadsby

1773 - 1844 Author of "Mercy Speaks By Jesu's Blood" in The Cyber Hymnal Gadsby, William , was born in 1773 at Attleborough, in Warwickshire. In 1793 he joined the Baptist church at Coventry, and in 1798 began to preach. In 1800 a chapel was built for him at Desford, in Leicestershire, and two years later another in the town of Hinckley. In 1805 he removed to Manchester, becoming minister of a chapel in Rochdale Boad, where he continued until his death, in January, 1844. Gadsby was for many years exceedingly popular as a preacher of the High Calvinist faith, and visited in that capacity most parts of England. He published The Nazarene's Songs, being a composition of Original Hymns, Manchester, 1814; and Hymns on the Death of the Princess Charlotte, Manchester, 1817. In 1814 he also published A Selection of Hymns for Public Worship, appending thereto a large number of his own compositions [Baptist Hymnody, § nr., 2]. The edition of 1882 pub. by his son J. Gadsby contains 1138 hymns, of which 157 are by William Gadsby, and form Pt. ii. of the Selection From his point of view they are sound in doctrine, but have little poetic fervour, and the rhyme is faulty in a large number of instances. Richard Meux Benson

1824 - 1915 Person Name: Richard M. Benson Author of "Praise to God Who Reigns Above" in The Cyber Hymnal The Rev. Richard M. Benson was a clergyman of the Church of England, and was one of the "Cowley Brothers." He spent some time in 1870-71 in the United States, labouring with zeal and success in several dioceses. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872. ===================== Benson, Richard Meux , M.A., educated at Christ Church, Oxford; B.A., in honours, 1847, M.A., 1849. On taking Holy Orders, he became curate of St. Mark's, Surbiton, 1849; and Vicar of Cowley, Oxford, 1850. He is also Student of Christ Church, Oxford. His works include The Wisdom of the Son of David; Redemption, 1861; The Divine Rule of Prayer; and others. His hymns, “O Thou whose all redeeming might," a translation of "Jesu, Redemptor omnium," q, v., and "Praise to God Who reigns above," were contributed to Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1861. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Francis H. Champneys

1848 - 1930 Person Name: Francis Henry Champneys Composer of "XAVIER" in The Cyber Hymnal Born: March 25, 1848, in the rectory of St. Mary’s, Whitechapel, London, England. Died: July 30, 1930, Nutley, Sussex, England. Francis’ father was William Champneys, Canon of St. Paul’s, and later Dean of Lichfield. Francis was educated at Winchester College and Brasenose College, Oxford (MA & MB 1875, MD later). An amateur musician, he studied under John Goss, held various musical positions from 1880 to 1913, and chaired the Central Midwives’ Board (1903-30).
