O Precious Saviour, Heal and Bless

Author: Anna B. D. Hoppe Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #393 (1937) Lyrics: 1 O precious Saviour, heal and bless The suff'rers in affliction. Thou knowest, Lord, their helplessness; Look down in benediction Upon the sick who seek Thine aid, Let them in faith, all unafraid, Rest in Thy tender mercy. 2 "Remember them that are in bonds," Thy Word so gently pleadeth, Thy mercy to our prayers responds, Thy kindness intercedeth. Fill us with love, Thou Love divine, Toward all who in affliction pine, Let us reflect Thy patience. 3 O dearest Lord, remember those In bonds of dread diseases; Incarnate God, Thy wisdom knows The balsam that releases. Thou Sufferer of Calvary, Let these afflicted hide in Thee, And in Thy wounds find healing. Amen.

Anna Hoppe

1889 - 1941 Person Name: Anna Hoppe Author of "O Precious Saviour, Heal and Bless" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Anna Hoppe was born on May 7, 1889 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She left school after the eighth grade and worked as a stenographer. She began writing patriotic verses when she was very young and by the age of 25 she was writing spiritual poetry. After some of her poems appeared in the Northwestern Lutheran, a periodical of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, they came to the attention of Dr. Adolf Hult of Augustana Seminary, Rock Island, Illinois. He influenced her to write her Songs for the Church Year (1928). Several hymnals include her work, which was usually set to traditional chorale melodies, although she also made a number of translations. She died on August 2, 1941 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
