We Won't Give Up The Bible

Author: William M. Whittemore Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #10009 Meter: 7.6.8.6.8.6.8.6 First Line: We won’t give up the Bible Lyrics: 1 We won’t give up the Bible— God’s holy book of truth; The blessèd staff of hoary age, The guide of early youth; The lamp that sheds a glorious light O’er every dreary road; The voice that speaks a Savior’s love, And calls us back to God. 2 We won’t give up the Bible, For pleasure or for pain; We’ll buy the truth, and sell it not For all that we might gain; Though man should try to take our prize, By guile or cruel might, We’ll suffer all that men can do, And God defend the right! 3 We won’t give up the Bible, But spread it far and wide, Until its saving voice be heard Beyond the rolling tide— Till all shall feel its precious power: While we, with voice and heart, Resolve that from God’s sacred Word We’ll never, never part! Languages: English Tune Title: ANTALYA

Robert Jackson

1840 - 1914 Composer of "LYMINGTON" in The Song Companion to the Scriptures After receiving his musical training at the Royal Academy of Music, Robert Jackson (b, Oldham, Lancashire, England, 1840; d. Oldham, 1914) worked briefly as organist at St. Mark's Church, Grosvenor Square, in London. But he spent most of his life as organist at St. Peter's Church in Oldham (1868-1914), where his father had previously been organist for forty-eight years. A composer of hymn tunes, Jackson was also the conductor of the Oldham Music Society and Werneth Vocal Society. Bert Polman

Joseph Haydn

1732 - 1809 Person Name: Haydn Composer of "BRADFORD" in The Sunday School Hymnary Franz Joseph Haydn (b. Rohrau, Austria, 1732; d. Vienna, Austria, 1809) Haydn's life was relatively uneventful, but his artistic legacy was truly astounding. He began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, spent some years in that city making a precarious living as a music teacher and composer, and then served as music director for the Esterhazy family from 1761 to 1790. Haydn became a most productive and widely respected composer of symphonies, chamber music, and piano sonatas. In his retirement years he took two extended tours to England, which resulted in his "London" symphonies and (because of G. F. Handel's influence) in oratorios. Haydn's church music includes six great Masses and a few original hymn tunes. Hymnal editors have also arranged hymn tunes from various themes in Haydn's music. Bert Polman
